Malta Fashion Week : Day 4 : 2015

It was a full house tonight at the beautiful Chamber of Commerce in Valletta, Malta - incredible turnout and great atmosphere. Three widely different designers showcased tonight - Julia Boikova, Marco Parascandalo and Sai Suman. The highlight of the evening was without a doubt Marco Parascandalo, a designer who has taken local street wear designs to a new level and gained quite a bit of popularity over the last year.

His new collection builds on his previous concepts of street wear using slogans and becomes a bit more intelligent with a range of interesting pieces using different fabrics and employing different cuts and shapes. The silk cotton shirts are beautiful as are the fur/hair ? bombers and tops but the patchwork denim pieces stole my heart.Whilst the collection is both highly wearable and sellable I was pleased to also see some more creative and daring pieces especially in terms of how certain pieces were presented on the catwalk - skandlu boxers anyone ?. It was a pleasure to watch Marco's show today.

Julia Boikova based her collection on a very interesting pattern that was inspired by a single photo of a rope that she brought from India. The show had a very sporty vibe and I really liked the presentation and styling of the show including the music that accompanied it. The collection was pleasant enough and I like the fact that she used her trademark pattern throughout but presenting it in different manners and combinations. I would have preferred and been interested to see a couple more creative pieces in the lineup, it did feel a bit too safe as a whole collection. I must also mention the ALDO sandals paired with some of the pieces - they're absolutely brilliant.

Sai Suman is a designer from India who showcased in Malta for the first time, she has been steadily gaining quite a large international following especially in Dubai and India. She presented a range of different couture and evening gowns forming a 'jungle' concept collection.

The pieces mainly incorporated Indian Bollywood type silhouettes and detailing, some of the gowns has some lovely intricate detailing. She also presented a few menswear pieces.

Events : River Island & Timberland Showcase

Last Saturday at Cafe del Mar along with the Saturday afternoon chill-out party atmosphere, they introduced a new concept called Fashion del Mar whereby some brands showcased some highlights from their Spring/Summer collection.

Here's a snippet of what River Island displayed and some of the key trends:

  • WHITE - think head-to-toe bright sparkling white - there's nothing more gorgeous than white in summer and this year it's a really really big trend, as a side trend white lace is big again.
  • MONOCHROME - white and black is carrying over from the Winter season and it looks just as fab in summer
  • CROP TOPS - yep these are still around this year
  • DENIM - is denim ever not in ?
  • FANNY PACKS - arghh not sure whether to love or hate this one but you have to admit there is at the very least the comfort appeal.

Timberland displayed and some lovely male fashion, it feels as though their designs have a bit more structure and tailoring to them than they used to. The shirts in particular have a lovely fit.

That's it folks - in case you're you know shop-oblivious Timberland is in Sliema, Bisazza Street and River Island is at The Point - Happy Shopping

Pick Your Favoutite at DIESEL

Last night in Sliema, Patron magazine threw a party in collaboration with Diesel. Diesel had the new Spring/Summer collection out on display and it's quite awesome, There's the usual Diesel denim, grunge-style clothes, especially within the male collection but there's also an element of 'freshness' about the collection. This is especially true for the female section. Gone are the entirely black rails but instead are some really interesting paint splattered pieces, some delicate, light florals, and some beautiful denim pieces. Everything still with that Diesel 'edgy' touch but they've incorporated a bit more femininity into it which I personally am always a fan of.

For this post, I asked some key persons to pick their favourite thing in the shop -

The hubby Kurt Paris picked that t-shirt above - there are a whole lot of slogan t-shirts to choose from by the way.

Daniel from Devil Wears Praduh picked his own Diesel Jacket below

Fashion Designer and Store Manager Marco Parascandalo picked my favourite piece from the women's collection - this multi-textured denim jacket.

Lastly, Silvan, anyone who has ever shopped from Diesel must know him as the person who's been handling a lot of  the behind-the-scenes work at Diesel for yonks. He picked this t-shirt from the women's collection.

We're not done - the slideshow with all my spotted items is below - see what I picked !!

Before you leave - what's your favourite ?

Street Style in Malta

Malta is renowned for many things but most of all for our gorgeous, warm sea and glorious sunny days. It is a fact that most ‘Maltesers’ hate cold weather and as a result, many tend to hibernate during the colder part of the year, swamping themselves in huge jackets when they do venture outdoors. It’s Spring now, and the days have got warmer and longer leading to most of us giving  a huge sigh of relief, end the forced hibernation and renew their interest in fashion.

The concept of street style in Malta is actually a relatively new thing. As a rule of thumb, we can be quite conservative and this mentality has generally extended itself to fashion. Up till a few years ago, the idea of individuality in the way we dress was something virtually unheard of. Times have changed however and now more and more people are choosing to express themselves and make a statement with their look. From the clothes we wear, the colour we choose to colour their hair, body piercings and tattoos - fashion individuality is becoming a marked presence on our streets.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, I took to the streets of Sliema with photographer Kurt Paris to spot as many interesting and varied looks as possible. The people spotted range from Maltese-born, expats - men and women alike.

There are some interesting trends around - jeans and denim, in general, remains a popular choice of garment for many people. I also spotted a lot of sneakers, some of them bright and colourful. Designer bags are always popular here, many women opt for a simple, polished, look paired with a designer bag; logo, monogrammed designer bags tend to generate a higher surge of interest than plainer options. It’s also interesting to note that on a relatively warm day, there were still people wearing thick jackets.

Shopping : Finding RELATIVES in DENIM

Yesterday, after I posted a denim-related insta pic, someone accused me of too much denim-speak, so much so, that I've apparently made them do something totally out of character - buy a shirt - a denim shirt. I greeted this statement with as much pleasure as I did the huge Kinder Easter Egg the hubby just bought me. A denim shirt is a truly versatile piece of clothing that one must, MUST I tell you, place in a wardrobe, ideally of course, there are said's shirt's siblings of mixed race and gender.

In other news, I visited KIABI over Spring break, yes I know Spring Break is for Americans..but in my own mind I've had one too ; maybe next year you can join me; and I was quite impressed with their denim range. I've decided to focus a shopping post on this range, and this should also help you find those aforementioned siblings.

Sibling No 1

More like a cousin

Maybe a grandparent ?

SPOTTED : Spring Beauties with a Denim Jacket

A Denim Jacket

A Denim Jacket is probably one of the most important and versatile pieces of clothing found in a wardrobe. There are literally hundreds of different outfits that can be tailored around a denim jacket and lets not forget that denim in general remains one of the hottest trends around this season. For this SPOTTED post I've toured some of my favourite shops and picked out a capsule wardrobe made up of some of my favourite items that work well with a denim jacket.

And the denim jacket chosen - this particular one is from Armani Jeans - it broke my heart when I saw it in the store because it has this darling, cute-as-pie black lace trim and It's just too sweet.

Soooo the capsule story is that we've got 3 different outfits: a super cool, fitted striped dress, ripped jeans and a crop top, loose fitting printed pants paired with a sweater. Each of these outfits will look great with the denim jacket.

Then.... as accessories we've again gone capsule-style and we've got a one-4-all fit..we've got a very funky saddle bag with gold hardware, yellow stiletto pumps, a gold boyfriend-style watch, a petrol-blue fedora hat, bright red lipstick, some bracelets, and a nautical-themed wallet. And all these accessories will look great with any of the 3 different outfits.

Where to buy them from:

Tommy Hilfiger
Jane Norman
Armani Jeans
NYX

These two pairs are my favourites, the animal print one is obviously coo land trendy and the other has a subtle design that just makes it look edgier and cooler.
