Malta Fashion Week : New Designers : 2015

The New Designer's Show is the longest show at Malta Fashion Week and a demonstration of what Malta's up and coming talent has to offer. There are some promising new designers that I will eagerly watch out for but unfortunately there were some others that I feel need to give their concepts a bit more thought next time round.

A few general comments

  • Quality of tailoring and finishing is important - if you're putting a collection out onto the catwalk, you need to ensure that the pieces are finished properly.
  • Quality of fabric is important - I realise that money may be tight but some of the fabrics I saw today should not be used in a fashion collection.
  • Stick to a concept - you might be bursting with hundreds of ideas but you need to be selective and choose 1 or 2 concepts to work with. Too many ideas presented at one go can leave the audience feeling disconnected and confused.
  • Don't just use any music - the music accompanying your show needs to match the mood of your collection.

First up was Margo de Vidal - Spanish designer based in Malta. Her accessories earn her a big 10 on 10, the belts are brilliant and the fanny pack has my name written all over it.

I did also quite like the tie dye long, flowing concept and the two piece crop top and trousers which had a very sharp look.

MC Fashion presented a neon collection. Viewing the collection as a whole, it did feel a bit too bright and dandy but some standalone items have an interesting vibe that I could see being worked into an outfit and paired with more basic pieces.

Fretka also presented a very bright collection. However, I felt that it didn't quite meet the expected standard. The material, tailoring and general design concept didn't feel very mature and it felt a bit lackluster and lacking in quality.

Mari Ahoy - I really liked one piece in this collection, a very interesting catsuit with cutout pieces.

The rest of the collection had way too many different things going on - with some sleek pieces, strange hats and even cartoon-like fabrics. I especially didn't like the skirt with side ties - way too much exposed flesh that really didn't work well on the catwalk and was quite unflattering.

Lukka - I would have liked to see more of a collection from Lukka, there was no real flow of a conceptual story or colour concept across the different pieces. Also, I felt some of the individual looks were over-accessorised and could have done with being a bit plainer, allowing more focus on the clothes. As individual items, there were a couple of looks I quite liked - my favourite was this metallic dress below - it is very wearable and I think a collection built around this sort of style could be quite successful for him.

Gaetano was my favourite of the night - his work was interesting, of good quality and great tailoring. It is also highly wearable and sellable. These are all important qualities to look for within a collection, I think he has a very exciting future as a designer ahead of him. There was a short dress that really caught my eye as something I would enjoy wearing but this dress below was the one that looked most  impressive from the audience.

Sarah Caruana Dingli earns a lot of points for a brilliant story concept, I loved the whole Alice in Wonderland direction she went for. Not all the pieces are wearable, some of them felt a bit theatrical but I really enjoyed watching this part of the New Designers show.

Gabrielle Fenech's pieces felt quite fresh and innovative. From what I overheard in the audience, they also appealed to a lot of people. Her prints are hand painted and she obviously spent quite a bit of of time ensuring that the little details on each of the pieces were exactly the way she wanted them to be. She's definitely one to watch out for.

Daze presented a highly sellable collection, the slogan t-shirts were fun and interesting and a lot of people will relate to and appreciate the vibe of their show.

Edith is a skilled, imaginative designer, her pieces have a certain sophisticated style about them and I love how she incorporates her costume design background into creating fashion pieces that are wearable and simultaneously dramatic.

Pochet! - this collection was very basic and didn't really bring anything new or innovative to the table. There's nothing wrong with it and I would wear a couple of pieces but I do feel that however sellable you want your collection to be,  there needs to be a bit more of an oomph at a fashion week show.

Beyond Couture - these dresses are quite lovely. I like the flowing fit, the choice of fabric and the way the colours and patterns were worked together. One point I will make is that there were a couple pieces that didn't quite fit the models right. This is a pity as it makes it harder to see the piece properly.

Maria Cutajar was another favourite, I loved the checked graphical designs and turbans but fell in absolute love with these wide hipped catsuits below. General good concepts and good designs, another one to watch out for.

Difference between Malta Fashion Week & Malta Fashion Awards

BRIDAL -2014 - Photo by KURT PARIS

The difference between Malta Fashion Week & Malta Fashion Awards might seem obvious to some. However, I've lost count of the number of times I've had to verbally explain to different people that there are two events in Malta and that going to the Saturday Night Awards Night does not mean you've attended Malta Fashion Week and sampled all that our local designers have to offer.

As the name implies, Fashion Week is something that happens over the span of an approximate week. In London, although still called a fashion WEEK, it is actually 5 days, in Milan 6, in Paris 8 ..you get the gist. In Malta, the length has varied from 7 - 8 days. A fashion week, in general, is one whereby on each day, there will be one or more shows showcasing both local and international designers. Presentations, parties and receptions might also feature into the mix. In large fashion weeks there might be something like 30 different official events happening on each day. In Malta, seeing as we cater to a far smaller population, it is generally 1 or 2. The Awards Night happens right after Fashion Week, on the final Saturday and is a small showcase of what happened throughout Fashion Week. There are also a number of other presentations, such as hair shows and of course the awards themselves.

In Malta, first came the Fashion Awards, back in 1997, 17 years ago. The fashion awards were immediately popular, happening once a year and gaining a larger audience each year. Five years ago, Malta Fashion Week was created and it's been happening once yearly ever since. Since the awards night is the original event, it is the one event which most Maltese people are familiar with and thereby attend. Whilst it is great that a large audience attends this night, I fear that  a lot of people haven't actually understood that there are many more events in the days prior to the awards night. Tickets to the Fashion Week events are actually free !! It's just a matter of booking your place with the organisers and this last bit is important, especially for the more popular ones as these tend to get booked out within a few days.

On the individual days, during Fashion Week, the designers get a chance to showcase a larger amount of pieces from their collections, in a more intimate setting. If you are truly interested in learning about a designer, attending the individual show will better serve this purpose.

Throughout fashion week, there are also events such as  the extremely popular and always booked out New Designers. Over here, new, emerging designers showcase pieces as a means of participating in the New Designer Competition, awarded on the awards night.

The Bridal show is also a popular one, especially with prospective brides and one of my favourites is the International Designers Night which showcases different designers from all corners of the world.

The dates for this year's events are from the 9th May to the 16th May and a little birdie has told me that the calendar of events will soon be launched so keep your eyes and ears peeled for more info.

Events Post : MFWA New Designers Show - Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Malta 2014

Hot on the heels of the solo designer show yesterday morning, last night at Casino Maltese 12 young designers exhibited their work and new collections to the public. Great fashion show modelled by supernovamodels, com, hair by Elaine Galea, Krista Paris and Eva Garden and some really lovely hairstyles (fishtails!) by Dreads Salon.

First out on the catwalk was Edith and she opened with quite a bang...there were lots of lovely pieces and I especially liked the feather details, but of course the most impressive piece was the black dress with a gold leaf cape modelled by Sarah Bonaci and WOW ...this is one stunning piece.

Next was Gremar, a more established designer who has been working as a designer for a few years now, the pieces are lovely and quite exquisite, lovely lace pieces with intricate jewelled details and some lovely dresses made using some type of Serbian 3D technique that gave quite an elaborate effect.

Up next was Marta Gomez Vidal and this collection was quite interesting - aztec patterns, bright colours combined with leather harnesses and some lovely bags. I liked this designer's use of colour and different patterns.

The next designer was menswear, if I'm not wrong this is the first time in the Malta Fashion Week that a new designer has presented a menswear collection. Marco Parascandalo was a lot of people's favourite, his ready-to-wear street inspired pieces are fun, trendy and highly wearable...love the shorts and slogan t-shirts...think he must think about womenswear next.

Churpina - has a very bubbly, eclectic image and that was really reflected in her clothes. They were some very interesting designs and some really nice colour and pattern combinations.

Fransina and her lovely handmade bags was next. I love bags so it comes as no surprise that this was one of my favourite collections, I'm a sucker for a beautiful bag and these had lovely details like wooden handles, slouchy soft material, these have definitely been added to my shopping list.

Mosca really impressed me, her collection was absolutely superb...the material used is wonderful - there were slinky dresses and tops, leather bags with different textures. These pieces felt very 'finished' for want of a better word and of a very high quality. They didn't feel in any way experimental, they are the sort of pieces you would expect to find in a showroom of an established designer.

Lukka had some really lovely dresses and skirts, I loved the main plum colour and the floral pattern. There was a dress in particular with puffy sleeves that I really, really loved.

Taia - Mandy and Alicia's floral themed collection had very nice tailoring - the pieces fit very well and each piece had a good sense of body proportions. They also paid a great deal of attention to the little details like using different materials for buttons and different textures in one piece. My particular favourites were a flouncy skirt that I really fell in love with and a pair of printed, leather boots.

Celeste
This girl is not new to Malta Fashion Week or fashion design and she presented a great collection with a variety of different items, her collection was inspired by the five stages of grief that follow death.

Poshet!
These bags are fun and interesting with a nice dose of quirkiness, a nice handbag always excites me.

Rosemarie Abela was most definitely last but not least....this was some serious brilliant designing work, inspired by Asia and the ancient Samurais - Rosemarie spared no effort or expense. From the exquisite choice of fabrics (lots of silk and lovely knit) to the interesting, unique designs and surreal accessories, I was really impressed, this is one talented girl.

In the past years, I must admit this show was never one of the highlights former, whilst there were always one or two really god designers, few really presented something a bit special worthy of a fashion week and some felt a bit drab and of poor quality. This year I was so please to see how the standard has really shot up and all the designers put in a great deal of effort - thumbs up to all

MFWA : CELESTE - New Designer - Mercedes Benz Malta Fashion Week 2014

On Saturday the 24th May, the New Designers Fashion Show will take place as part of Malta Fashion Week 2014. This is the show in which emerging local designers have the chance to show the country their designs and basically get noticed, it is also a form of competition as one designer will win the best new designer award at the Malta Fashion Awards one week later. In anticipation of this event, (one of my favourite in the whole week) , I will be shining the spotlight on each of these 'new designers'.

Today we shine the spotlight on Celeste - a brand made up of two female designers creating womenswear.

Martina Spiteri is the woman behind Celeste and she started out back in 2009, when she was still just 17. Two of her first designed outfits were shown on Phase magazine, she followed this up by attending a short course in Fashion Design and then followed a tailoring course at MCAST.

This will be her third time participating in Malta Fashion week, the name of her collection is is Douleur (French for pain and grief) is inspired by the five stages of grief that follow death, here is a sneak peek into this collection - gorgeous fabric

Her future plans include finding more time to focus on my brand and collections as well as increasing her clientèle.
