Shopping Post : RAOUL

Who is RAOUL?

RAOUL, from the house of F J Benjamin is one of those brands that is currently enjoying a wave of popularity. Douglas and Odile Benjamin are the husband and wife power couple behind this Singapore - based brand. The new collection. Has just arrived to Malta, at Rebelli so I thought I'd stop by and have a look. I love the feminine, powerful cuts, the graphical prints and the combination of different fabrics. There's a lot of versatility in the range even as to which occasion to wear the pieces too - there are long, beautiful dresses, midi skirts, tailored shorts and kimonos.

See what caught my eye

Family Corner : Maternity Wear at KIABI

From what I've heard, being heavily pregnant in summer isn't all that great what with the summer heat, summer weddings, parties, BBQs and events - apparently, generally, many pregnant women end up hot and bothered. Whilst clothes can't solve the heat problem, new clothes can hopefully generate a few smiles at the very least especially easy-to-wear summer dresses.

Here are some of the new stock options from KIABI that caught my eye - there are some bright colours, a bit of white and a few greys. My take is to wear bright clothes to uplift a bad mood, grey when you're feeling passive and white when you're happy.

Hair : The Correct Way To Blow dry Maltese Hair

In Malta, we are blessed with many beautiful things but one thing we definitely aren't blessed with is weather-friendly hair and easily manageable hair (although the latter one does apply for a lucky few) The weather in Malta tends to be very humid, enabling our already rather coarse and frizzy hair to guess what ? Frizz.

So how do we beat the frizz and get long-lasting smooth and sleek hair? I sat down with Gordon Mayo, CEO and director of Toni and Guy Malta and asked him a few questions.

Q&A with Gordon Mayo - The Correct Way To Blow dry Maltese Hair

My first question is a bit of a story. Over the years, I've had many disastrous blow outs. There has been many a time when I have had to watch my hair frizz into a puff ball, merely an hour or two after leaving the salon. However, on occasion, irrespective of ongoing humidity, I have also seen my blow dry withstand the climate and perform a miracle - remain sleek and smooth for a few days. This leads me to believe that there must be different techniques in existence for blow drying hair. Am I right?

Gordon - Yes, there are two different ways to use heat styling - Cohesive Setting or Heating Set. The latter method is the one that should be used on frizz-prone hair - it basically involves drying out all the moisture using a heating element set on the highest setting. The bonds of the hair will be stretched and moulded into a new shape. The first method does not use as much heat and is generally used on less frizz-prone hair to simply shape it.

My next question is of course about the damage all this heat must be doing to our hair.

Gordon -  Luckily enough, our frizzy hair tends to have more cuticles protecting the hair shaft and can withstand more heat. However, heat protecting products should always be used - no blow dry should be performed without the use of heat protection. Many of these products are actually heat activated and will give off a smoke signal when the hair is readily straightened which means - stop.

Next, I want to know what happens in severe humidity / dew?

Gordon - The heating set technique the hair is no longer an absorbent so it will reject the moisture in the air and remain straight.

But what about steam?

Gordon - Steam is dangerous - if steam or hot water makes contact with hair that has been set using heat se.t then the bonds will be broken and the hair will frizz.

Any other tricks?

Gordon - An important trick is to always finish off a blow dry using the cold setting on the dryer. The cold air closes the head pores sweat glands in the hair that all the heat has just opened and turns the hair back into its negative state i.e 'fixes it'.

Beauty : A Fish Pedi

Last Saturday, I decided to do something a little bit different. First off - The Entertainer has asked me to pick a few of the experiences available on their list and try them out using the Entertainer Product App.

After scanning the huge list, I immediately chose the Fish Lounge. I had tried a fish pedicure in Malaysia a few years ago and have been meaning to go to the Fish Lounge ever since it opened, in St Julian's, but somehow, I never got round to it. If you're not quite sure what a fish pedicure is - it's basically 20 or 30 minutes of letting your feet soak in a fish tank filled with special fish that will nibble away very slowly at your dry skin.

At 11 am on a Saturday morning, the place is still quiet, by the afternoon it's usually quite busy, I liked the fact that I had the palce to myself so to speak. A good thing about going during off-peak hours is that you can easily choose which category of fish you want to experience. There are three levels of intensity - the highest will bite off the most skin but might feel uncomfortable especially if you're ticklish. I tried the medium intensity option.

The process starts off with a foot wash using a special, non-toxic wash. My feet were then immersed into a fish tank filled with over a 100 fish that have come all the way from Turkey and I just sat back and relaxed for 30 minutes. The sensation is quite similar to a foot massage - it's really quite relaxing and doesn't feel at all painful.

After 30 minutes, I looked at my rejuvenated feet out and saw lovely looking feet with most if not all of the dry, hard skin gone. In my case, the dry skin hasn't left completely but my recent frolicking with insanely high heels across all the recent fashion events had given me quite an abundance of dry skin. I was happy enough with the resulting dry skin reduction.

Besides pedis, they also have a full-body option in Bugibba, which I plan on trying in July so watch this space for more fishy reviews.

Sooooo, next scan the photo,s and jump to the end of the post and read about a 2-for-1 offer.

So how does the Entertainer and 2-for-1 work?

The Entertainer is a recently-launched international product that is yep you guessed it - based upon a 2-for-1 system. It is a product you buy, either as an app or as a hard-copy book, you then have a set of 2-for-1 vouchers for a range of different services that can be used any day and time.

With beauty services, you can use the offer to get two at that time or get an advance free service rather than sharing. There are also a lot of meal vouchers on the app but those are meant to be shared.

NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS - I've teamed up with the Entertainer to offer you guys a 10% discount on the product - simply enter CAROLINE10 in the promo code box in the shopping cart from the website

Outfit Post : A little bit of denim, a little bit of rubber

About two weeks ago, I both attended and worked backstage at The Pink fashion Sho. This summer edition was set up with a whole sports theme including a fantastic catwalk resembling a race track. When we received the invite asking us to wear flats and rubber soles.

I immediately only wanted to wear heels so it took me a while to decide what to wear. Ok time for honesty - this was one of those frivolous days where I actually went out and got a brand new pair of shoes for the night. The problem was that I had recently used these same shoes when styling the fashion editorial for Style magazine. When I saw the words rubber soles on the invite..I think you get the gist....no outfit could possibly be complete without them.

Beauty : DEFINED BROWS

Some months ago, I mentioned having had my eyebrows done using a definition method. This meant is, as the name implies to provide much more definition than previously used techniques. I promised further explanation and as I always say - better late than never.

The idea of fully defined eyebrows was born from the idea of the proprietary system HD brows, this system was developed as a seven-step treatment involving threading, tweezing and colour-dyeing. I didn’t actually go for the official HD brows - I opted for a similar service offered by Luisa at Femme Beauty in Attard that’s really well priced at just 4 euros.

The steps in the process were the following

  1. CONSULTATION - Luisa examined the shape of my face and the natural shape of my eyebrows. In my case I have a bit of a hole at the top of one of them, she determined which shape would work best so as to minimise the appearance of this hole..
  2. TINTING - Dye was applied to my brows - the dye is important so as to draw more attention to the brows and get a more uniform colour across even the sparser hairs.
  3. WAXING - The third step was the use of high precision wax to remove unwanted hair, both from below and above the brow, this last bit is really important to achieve that fully defined look.
  4. TWEEZING - Tweezing was then also used to remove those odd, stray hairs that didn’t get picked up by the wax.
  5. SOOTHING - After waxing any hair off, it’s always really important to have a good soothing cream applied and it feels really good too.
  6. FINISHING OFF - This is when I got to look in the mirror, ask questions and ask about how to use an eyebrow pencil to fill in any gaps there might be. In my case, the hole was so much less visible I’m actually opting not to use the eyebrow pencil unless it;s really a special occassion.
Remember that defined does not mean sparse or over-plucked, you can choose to have them thick but still defined.

Week 7 : PLAN H

This was the last week of my 8-week PLAN H challenge. Yes, I know the pic says week 7, but that was because I started the posts after a week had already gone by. I've already elaborated on how much weight I lost and how I'm now in maintenance phase - you can read all about my experiences here and here and here. For today, I'm going to answer a bunch of questions you guys have been asking me all throughout these 8 weeks. If you're wondering what on earth I'm talking about...catch up here

Are the portions small?
According to the hubby and I, they're actually quite large. If you're used to 150g pasta portions, then these will feel smaller but they are really more than adequate in size. I put up some photos in this last post that clearly show the entire portion of a main meal. It also depends on what the meal is, e.g. personally I'm much happier with barley than couscous because the couscous portions tend to be smaller and I'd rather have more food.

Do they deliver every day?
Yes, except for Sunday. Sunday meals are delivered on Saturday. Otherwise, it's cooked fresh daily.

Can you arrange delivery times?
Across these 8 weeks I was in the middle of a bit of a few whirlwind life changes (more on that to come) and there was fashion week, there were night shoots - so I probably drove them crazy asking for different times and locations. However, they actually met all my insane requirements, a fact which, to be honest, surprised me.

Can you choose your meals?
At the start of the plan, you will give them your list of items that you don't like or can't eat. They will adapt and change certain dishes to suit your requirements. Also, at the start of the week you get the list of daily main courses (lunch and dinner) so you can opt for eating the same meal for lunch and dinner for instance or ask for something to be altered slightly. I'm a notorious fussy eater and really didn't have any problems in this regards.

Can you choose your snacks and breakfasts?
Well, I was never given a choice to choose from but I never really gave a list of things I wouldn't eat or want in my snacks. The snacks are mainly fruit, nuts and seeds, banana bread, lots of dips, greek yoghurt, carrot muffins.... These are all things I like so I didn't need to be a fussy snack person.

Isn't it too expensive?
First of all, you can see the prices here. This is a debatable question that needs to start off from the basic calculation as to how much you are currently spending to feed yourself. This varies drastically from person to person, there are people who eat pastizzi daily and people who order chicken salads from restaurants every day for lunch. The good thing about Plan H is that it cuts down on your grocery and cooking time and expenses. There is relly no need to buy yourself any groceries if you're on this plan.

Do you get the recipes?
Yes, you do. There's a facebook group available when you sign up and a lot of recipes are already available, but you can also request a new recipe that's not on there.

But what about my husband/partner/wife?
Well, I guess if you need to feed another person anyway, then maybe part of the attraction (saving time) is gone. I think they might offer some type of discount for joint deliveries if your significant other is interested, but I don't really have full details about this, so best to contact them.

Would I do it again?
Well, actually, I've decided to keep it for a while longer - Mon-Fri. I've lost the weight I wanted to lose so I don't think I need to be on it 7 days a week, plus my weekends are a bit erratic and if I'm out for a whole day, I've found it difficult to either carry the food with me in a cooler and find a place to eat it or wait until I get home to eat it. Also, I do love eating out and that way it's easier to be good Mon - Fri knowing you'll get to cheat on the weekend.

I've decided to stay on it because it is simply too convenient and too fool proof. Prior to being on Plan H, I had found myself in this dangerous cycle of obsessing over how many calories I was eating, yet pigging out on chocolates and sweets frequently. I desperately wanted to stop eating those sweets, I really wanted to lose 4 kilos and the whole thing was really weighing me down.  I was constantly obsessing over what I ate and what I was going to eat and bla bla bla. I know I wasn't overweight, I acknowledge I was still thin but it's all about the size you're used to being and what makes you feel comfortable and I wasn't.

I've read that diets give you cravings and in my case that had happened. I don't know why Plan H is different because it's not like they give you burgers and chips after all. Maybe it's because the menu is so varied (I think in 8 weeks I only had my mains repeated three times), maybe because it's really tasty and interesting, but it doesn't feel like a diet. The truth is, that whilst my cravings for chocolate never went away (I think that's just a myth), they did lessen. I didn't feel unhappy or deprived, yes there were times I wanted a burger but not every day.

What's next for the blog?
When I started writing about PLAN H, I wasn't sure how you guys would respond, but the interest was actually overwhelming. This made me realise that whilst my readers, yes, are into fashion and shopping etc, they'd also love there to be more lifestyle-related articles some more personal ones. So I'm starting a new series called CLEAN LIVING. This weekly series will focus on exercise (I spend a large portion of my time at a gym so it makes sense), including what to wear to gyms and workout gadgets, healthy food, new restaurants, more updates on plan h - you get the gist. Occasionally, the series might cheat a little and talk about living options that aren't all that clean :)

Let me know if any of you want anything specific to be on this series
