News Flash : A Burger and a T-Shirt

Over the past few years, fast food and fashion have been making an unlikely pairing. It all started when Moschino launched their McDonalds-inspired collection, the trend caught on in high street stores in a big way - with clothing items covered in pizzas, chips and burgers appearing everywhere and becoming sell out items. House of Holland even had nails created  and ASOS designed burger and fries plimsolls.

McDonald's, after all, is the actual original Moschino inspiration. They have decided to play their own fashion game and they started out in Paris at the iconic Colette store - they launched the specifically designed merchandise with pictorials resembling icons, like the ones used on tablets and apps (pic below). In Italy, they did something similar, they partnered up with the mega store Coin and even had skateboards designed.

Since you're on my blog and we're in Malta - yep you guessed it - they're launching the line for Malta, the style is similar, using the same images. There are a number of summer-related items - tote bags, towels, ball and racquets and my fave of the lot - t-shirts.

When this trend first made an appearance, I wasn't too sure I liked the idea of wearing fast-food but it did grow on me and there's an obvious humorous element to wearing a t-shirt with a bag of fries on it. I especially liek the idea of sunbathing on a burger towel on a sandy beach - that would be one interesting selfie opportunity.

So how do you get your hands on this stuff? Well their slogan is ‘Everybody is a Winner with McDonald’s’ from 19th June onwards and will involve a scratch card competition - so stay tuned.

Which T-Shirt would you want  ?- the ice cream / the burger or the fries? I think I want a burger.

NEWS : It's the People's Place at TOMMY

Tommy Hilfiger opened the very first store called People’s Place in New York back in the 1969 when he was still a teen. Like any teen of his generation, his main interests centered around music - rock and roll, friends and fashion. The shop was a hangout for him and his friends where they burned incense, dressed like rock stars, listened to music and painted all the walls black. The brand has grown and evolved in many ways since then and many different styles have been developed over the years.

They've also selected different fashion bloggers in each country to cover this launch and guess who's Malta's ? I've snapped some pictures of the items that you can scroll down and view but I suggest you pop by the store and get a feel for it. The quality is really lovely and I really enjoyed the vibe of the display itself.
"The collection celebrates a sense of individuality and reflects some of the iconic imagery that’s at the heart of rock music.”

So for the when and where details -

  • Starts 25th March and runs until 3rd April at The Point and Valletta - Saturday 28th there will also be a DJ in store
  • Last but not least - they're also giving a free canvas bag (below...it comes in red as well) from the collection with every pair of denim purchased.

NEWS FLASH & COMPETITION - EYEBROW EXTENSIONS in MALTA

Some exciting news EYEBROW EXTENSIONS finally in MALTA - Makeup Artist Krista Paris has undergone a certified course for eyebrow extensions and has now started offering this amazing service.

What are eyebrow extensions and Why do we need them?

Eyebrow extensions are similar to eyelash extensions - the process "involves carefully gluing individual synthetic hairs onto existing fine hairs or directly onto the skin in order to fill in gaps, add volume and extend the brow line" - note the difference between the past methods that involved attaching extensions to existing hair

Basically, whether through over plucking or through simple genetics, as women grow older they start to suffer eyebrow hair loss - traditionally the way to cover this loss up has been to either use eyebrow pencil or get a permanent tattoo done. It could also be the case that you are simply born with a part of the eyebrow missing, meaning you might have a hole on top or they are a bit too short..it could also be through having fallen as a child and needing stitches- there are countless reasons why a woman might need eyebrow extensions.

The rectifeye extensions which is the brand Krista will be using are available in 5 shades: honey-blonde, auburn, medium brown, dark brown, and black. There are also two different types of thicknesses and two curl types and of course Krista will be using her magic to be sure that each eyebrow design will also be tailored to suit the age and face shape of each individual.

As a side note - "Brow Extensions are waterproof, sweat proof, and safe for sensitive skin and last 2-3 weeks with proper care! They are perfect for any special occasion, holiday or for long-term wear by means of refills."

Check out some of her work below

NEWS : Mrs Muscat meets Mrs Obama & Her Outfit

Photo from MaltaToday FB Page

If you recall, last year I reported that Mrs Michelle Muscat traveled to America to meet Mrs. Michelle Obama. You can read that post here. This year she's traveled to the states again, first of all to attend the summit of Fashion For Development, I'm not sure whether this is going to affect the Maltese fashion industry in any way but I'm hoping it will ..you can read up about the project here - it looks very interesting. I like the dress she's wearing (pic below), have no idea who it's by but the colour and shape are right up my alley..anyone who knows who the designer is let me know.

Anyway, the point is that she met the American First Lady again and she did it once again wearing Charles and Ron (topmost pic above). As usual I've already seen both negative and positive comments on social media as to whether they like the dress or not but I think this is all just besides the point Some people might like one dress more, some another - fashion is after all a subjective art. What I care about ,is that she's chosen to wear a Maltese designer rather than a foreign one and although I'm not with her there, I'm sure she's been asked who the designer is and I'm sure that even if some people disliked the dress, there are many others who like it and those will remember the name Charles and Ron.

My opinion regarding the dress is - I like it, maybe it could have been a tad bit shorter but then again the angle of the photograph is making her appear shorter so that could be why it seems a bit long. I love the net covering, I think its a super stylish way to cover up your shoulders and I'm guessing this might have been a requirement for her. The colour black slims her figure and looks elegant, and the orange colour pops against the black. Charles and Ron had this dress custom made for her. I saw a comment about Mrs Michelle Obama looking younger with her arms exposed - I do want to point out here that Mrs Michelle Obama is notorious for having one of the most toned bodies in the American public limelight..to be honest I don't know if Mrs Michelle Muscat's are toned or not and if she covered them up for this reason, but I think few women's arms look like Michelle Obama's past a certain age, I think I would cover up mine standing next to her.

Now I can't write this post without mentioning her very recent appearance, also in a Charles and Ron dress to greet Prince William - this dress I absolutely adored, first off I love this pattern, have done so since I first saw it at Malta Fashion Week 2014, secondly, I love the way they tailored it to her body. I like it miles better than the orange outfit she wore at the Mass the next day, that I felt aged her slightly.

So now it's your turn.. I want to know whether you like the dress or not ?

Simshar : Interviewing Ernest Camilleri

Ernest Camilleri should need no introduction to my Maltese readers, a local legend as regards costume design and I already spoke about him two days ago in an article that highlighted the differences between costume and fashion...

As promised here is Ernest Camilleri's interview ...in his own words he describes to us the process a costume designer goes through when working on a film and the downs and ups of his job.

First of all - tell us something about yourself and how you got started working in the world of film
I had been designing and making costumes since the age of 13, when I used to create costumes for the Gozo Carnival.  A few years later I went to MTADA (Manoel Theatre Academy of Dramatic Arts) where I studied drama and costume. When the course was over I was asked to design costumes for the Pantomime and following that it was a rollercoaster ride of designing/making costumes for several theatre and dance productions.

In the world of film it all started when PCP Company asked me to style a commercial for Corona Beer which included a number of pirate and British army uniforms from the period of the late 18'00s.  From then on I ended up working regularly in films and commercials.
Over the past few years I also started working on international events such as the London Olympic Flag Handover and most recently the Winter Olympics.

Were you familiar with the story of Simshar when you were asked to come on board..was it a story that had particular meaning or interest in any way for you ?
3 years ago Rebecca contacted me and told me that she had plans to create a film about the Simshar story.  I was familiar with the actual happening of Simshar as it was all over the news, so I was very excited when I was presented with this opportunity to design costumes for a film based on actual facts; I had to re-create characters of actual people, giving them a look to suit the purposes of the film. This is not that easy.

How did you go about planning the various outfits?
After having read the script and discussed it with Rebecca, I started researching the characters and what relation they have to the story.  Rebecca wished to make the film colour graded, meaning certain colours would convey the mood, so we took it a step further were I dressed certain actors in certain colours.  At first look most of these things would go unnoticed but then the eye will start to associate certain colours with certain actors and certain moods.

And how do you go about creating them?
This is the actual fun part, the point at which the design actually becomes alive.  There is fabric sourcing, buying second hand clothes and shoes, hiring of uniforms and making of uniforms.  We also went about dyeing and ageing almost all the costumes to give them a worn look and even making band new costumes and ageing them to make them look real.  The list is never ending.

What was your biggest hurdle throughout production of the movie?
I would say that we had to do an awful lot to do with little time and money.

The première and release date is almost here...are you excited to see what everyone is going to think?
I am sure that all people involved are excited about the première as this movie will raise the bar of the local film industry.

What is your answer to anyone who is still unsure about going to watch the movie?
Go and watch the movie, you will definitely enjoy it as it has a human side to it and not just a story.

And what will you be wearing to the première...any sneak peek available?
I usually go for more of a casual look, but nothing is set in stone :)

Remember that Simshar premières on the Sunday 27th April -this Sunday !

Simshar Spotlight : Costume vs Fashion

You must be sick of hearing me talk about the Simshar première by now but 'I'm so excited..I just can't hide 'it........remember Sunday 27th ...wohooooo...get dressed up..... I'm scouting :)

I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing costume designer extraordinaire Ernest Camilleri and we got to discussing the huge differences between working on a film and working in fashion and whilst his interview will follow suit very very soon..in the meantime I thought it would be fun to list these differences:

Intention
Fashion : Worn by a model or a person as fashion statement
Costume : Worn by an actor/actress to convey a character and idea of a person.

Appearance

Fashion : The focus is on making the person in question look awesome.
Costume : The focus is on making sure the person's looks fit the character. This might mean making the person look ugly and making the person wear something that really doesn't flatter them..so yes it might even mean making the person look fatter than they are...

Planning

Fashion : The focus is most often on incorporating current trends and styles in interesting ways.
Costume : The focus is on researching the period, living situation, economic climate of the character in question and ensuring the costume meets all criteria.

Colour

Fashion : The focus is on the person' skin tone/ current trends / shoot theme
Costume : The focus is on the scene's mood ..colour can help to convey certain moods, infact Ernest apparently made use of this technique throughout Simshar.

Check back for Ernest's interview coming very very soon !!!

Simshar Spotlight : A Preview of Things To Come

Heya folks,
So for a little recap, if you recall, in my previous post I announced the super cool news that first of all Simshar the Movie is about to be released..and theres a fun premiere full of glitzy stuff happening on the 27th April.follow the link at the end of the post to buy your tickets...... AND Im the official fashion&style blogger on the night and in these weeks leading up to the event...fun times!

So let me tell you a bit about how this last bit is going to work - in the weeks leading up to the event I am going to learn, (and pass on what Im learning back to you) about costume&fashion, in relation to film. Whilst Ive worked in styling for TV programmes and TV seriesa film is a whole new ballpark were all the clothes are referred to as Costumes and as you can imagine, these differ enormously from one production to another, ranging from contemporary urban fashion, to of course, the more traditional outfits and ball-gowns.

To understand the magnitude of this task, you must realize how integral Costume design is in defining the overall look of the movie; it provides the audience with information about the culture and society the characters inhabit and their character traits, everything has to 'fit' and make sense according to what we are learning about the character if you know what I mean..

To learn something more about all of this I am going to be interviewing both Ernest Camilleri; one of Maltas top Costume Designers; who was responsible for designing, creating, acquiring and hiring all costumes for Actors and extras in the movie and Rebecca Cremona; the movies director; to find out what her perspective is about all of this.

Thennnnnn were also going to be meeting the films leading lady - Clare Agius and also Antonella Axisa, who plays a supporting role, and I will be asking both of them about what acting in the movie and wearing such a selection of costumes felt like and their overall experience.

Last but defo not least, in these interviews I am going to be asking all these people for info about what theyre wearing to the PREMIERE NIGHT...the news along the grapevine is that certain high profile Maltese designers have come on board to design something extra special for Claire, Rebecca, Antonella and Angelique.

I lied - theres one more thing - premiere night - I will be there, and Im going to be scouting the best looks...from both the VIP guest list and all other attendees..so dress up to the nines, I want to scout some glamour! - of and yes, Buy Your tickets HERE.

News Flash : Simshar Pemiere Announced

If you live in Malta and haven' heard about Simshar the Movie then you must have been living under a very large rock with no means of communication.

Simshar is one of the first big budget Maltese movies ever produced  and basically our first feature length film filmed for an international audience. Although fictional, it is based on true events, on the Maltese tragedy labelled 'Simshar'.

The official Plot Outline is as follows :
Young Theo is sent on his first trip with his Maltese sea faring family, but things go terribly wrong when the 'Simshar' sinks, leaving the crew stranded in the Mediterranean… Simultaneously, Alex — a medic reluctantly dispatched onto a Turkish Merchant vessel which has rescued a group of stranded African boat people between Malta and Italy — gets stuck on the boat as the countries wage a bureaucratic war over who should take in the migrants… The stories unravel in parallel and culminate tragically when the fishermen are traced down, but by that time there's only one survivor.

The good news is that the wait is finally over and the movie is ready to be released.

The movie premiere date has been announced - 27 April 2014 at Empire Cinemas, Bugibba.  It will be a red carpet event which will be attended by all the actors, key crew members. The great thing is that until tickets sell out, anyone can attend! Buy your tickets from here.

And in more good news I have joined the team to be the official style blogger for the pemiere night - this means that in the weeks leading up to the event I will be telling you all about the costumes used in the film, the clothes to be worn on the night by the leading women, the designers used etc etc I will also be covering the fashion on the night of course (both of the regular audience and the vip attendees) :)
So if you'e coming to the premiere make sure you wear your most fabulous outfit so as to get spotted.
