Models: Are they Stressed or Blessed ? by Claire Ciantar

Ladies and Gents - today we have something a bit different. Model Claire Ciantar has written the following article that I agreed to publish on this blog - all about the ups and down of modelling. A lot of girls look at modelling as something wonderful, whilst it does have it's great parts - it's not all a bed of roses !!

Photo above by Kurt Paris for PINK magazine. Read on to see what Claire has to say.

Models: Are they Stressed or Blessed ? by Claire Ciantar

From catwalks to studios, long hours, endless body scrutiny, strict diets and exercising. These are but a few of the conditions models face just to meet basic job expectations. Who ever said it was easy? I often hear people say, models are blessed - they get paid good money for pleasurable, undemanding jobs. Well, I myself am a model and from my three years experience I can honestly say - modelling jobs are no walk in the park.

Although models are viewed as people with a high self esteem, that's not always the case. Sometimes, especially in the beginning of a model's career, interviews can be horrible and some designers (not all) are just plain rude! I still remember it clearly, two years ago, during Malta Fashion Week, a foreign designer stripped my confidence by saying ''You're too fat, too big !''. When did size 8 become ''too fat'' ? This brings me to my first point, Weight. In order to be an international model, losing weight has to be the first and most important issue, yes, before looks. I would think everyone would agree with me that getting to a size 4-6 when you are six feet tall is not an easy task at all!

Black, Blue, silver, gold, shoes come in all sorts of colours, shapes and sizes and models get to wear them all during fashion shows as their feet parade on the dazzlingly lit catwalk. Beautiful though they are, squeezing into these new, sometimes ill-fitting shoes, standing and walking for hours can be pretty painful.

When you're a model, work comes in drags. You might have a really busy time, then have to wait months for work. It's hard to have another job or plan ahead - you need to be available to go to a shoot or show at the drop of a hat. In Malta, the busiest months of the year are October to November and May to June. If you're a student, through experience, I can assure you that a job will definitely clash with an important lecture / seminar / assignment / due date or even an exam.

Nonetheless, although it's not easy being a model, it has its perks. Modelling on the whole, is quite cool especially when you get to see the results of a great photo shoot or video of a fashion show. After all, all jobs have their negative side.

Random Post : The Perplexity of LEGGINGS

Leggings - I find these to be the most perplexing clothing item of all. I simply can't get why some women are so attached to them.

I can understand wearing them at home to lounge around in, I can understand wearing them under tunics. I can totally understand wearing them to a dance class but I can't for the life of me understand how this can happen . So lets look at this scenario - a woman applies full makeup, blow dries her hair, wears interesting jewellery, a great pair of shoes, an expensive handbag, a lovely short top and jacket and then finishes with black cotton-type, almost transparent leggings.

I'm not even talking about leather or patterned leggings, I'm talking about a pair of plain cotton-style leggings. How does that happen ? How does one make the decision to pair something so cheap and unflattering with an outfit that's otherwise perfect. In my opinion, there isn't even a question as to whether they suit the person - yes some people have toned bums and legs that can possibly stand being clad in something that fitted and obvious - but the ugliness of these leggings still remains. ' also the often-forgotten fact that leggings look even more horrible and become semi transparent if a photo with flash is taken of them.

I know not everyone cares or has an interest in fashion and I accept that. This is why I find leggings worn as pants easier to accept when combined with a head-to-toe 'ugly' outfit but on fashionable women - I'm just entirely baffled.

Opinions Anyone ?

Gisele Bundchen for Chanel No 5

Gisele Bundchen for Chanel No 5

I've always had mixed feelings about fashion films, sometimes I do see some great ones but then sometimes I see some that I think don't actually do anything and are just a series of images like a photo slideshow. Then along comes something like this absolute gem from Chanel with the mesmerising Giselle and it shows us all exactly how adverts / fashion films and everything else should be done.
I simply can't get over Giselle's beauty..is she seriously real ? I mean I've never met her..are we sure she's not some amazing generated 3D graphic ?

Random Post : The Industry of Modelling

Photography by Peter Lindbergh for Vogue Magazine/fd-inspired.com

It happens in every industry, in every profession, there are the good, the better and the bad. The modelling industry is no exception, both in terms of the people who organise events using models, both in those people who train models, and of course also in the models themselves.

Another thing a lot of people don't realise is that there are different types of models - Photo Models, Fashion Models, Beauty Pageant Models, Commercial Models, Glamour Models and many more. However, for many people the word model is synonymous with the supermodels, Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford ...the fashion models that took over the fashion industry some years back. These beautiful, genetically blessed women gave rise to a worldwide fascination with the idea and world of modelling and becoming a 'model' has been and will be for some years to come many a young girl's dream.

Unfortunately the problem with modelling in general but mostly fashion modelling is that your success and ability at becoming a model depends largely on the genetic lottery, this is not some university degree you can swot away at - if you were born somewhat short like me then there's no hope.. and there are other factors, the length of your limbs, your metabolism, your body and facial structure....this is an industry were entry depends mainly on aesthetics. Once you gain entry, success can depend on a number of factors including how hard the model works, attitude, personality etc but most people don't make it past the entry point.

So what about those girls that want to be a fashion model but didn't win at the genetic lottery sweepstakes - well my advice is to find another dream, if you're short you're short - and enough of people using Kate Moss as an example, Kate Moss is actually 5 '8' - she's short for a model not short. There is of course always the option of finding some modelling work that suits your shape and body  and opting for photo or commercial modelling but if your dream is to be the next Naomi Campbell then this isn't going to cut it and will probably only make you pine away for what you don't have.

Whilst I'm not in the habit of telling people to give up on their dreams, there are certain times when a healthy dose of realism is needed and my advice is to always be honest with yourselves even if other people aren't, especially if some other people might have something to gain from being dishonest.

Travel Post : Snapshots from ROME

Besides attending AltaRoma, there were other things I did in ROme, like walk on those pretty cobbled streets for hours on end, eat lots of ice cream, eat lots of spaghetti carbonara, visit some beautiful buildings, go shopping... lots of fun stuff. Rome is a wonderful city, this was my third time visiting and it was lovely because there wasn't the usual hustle of trying to cram all the important sights in a few days, this time I had time to just walk around, people watch, absorb the pulse of the city and absorb the food..lots and lots of delicious food.

Some interesting highlights were - visiting the Colosseum underground tour, it is now possible to visit down below in the pits from where the gladiators once entered the arena and also walk up to the very top (a tour must be pre-booked by phone). The Andy Warhol exhibition was a great insight into the life and art of this man as was the adjoining Terry O'Neil one. The Monti neighborhood has some excellent up and coming designers that create some really great stuff, dodging the various Roman drivers intent on running you over as you cross the road on zebra crossings is always fun. Last but not least, shopping around Piazza di Spagna is always a highlight and of course just simply having a coffee in one of the many piazzas and soaking it all in..

Some snapshots I took whilst roaming around the Eternal City.

Random Post : Proskins Slim - 52 days later - My Review

I  really must apologise ....you were meant to get this second review after 34 days but I decided to delay so as to be able to talk about maintenance and also because Easter with all it's chocolate moments came up and I felt like an absolute fraud talking about slim leggings whilst stuffing my face......

So first of all, lets start with what I did - I wore the top and leggings for 8 hours a day minimum, generally much longer for the first 28 days. Then I shortened it to a minimum of 6 hrs per day but still every day and this is still my current behaviour. I also try my best to wear them after a big meal.
So lets review the claims individually

Claim 1: Reduces the Appearance of Cellulite
As already mentioned, the cellulite on my thighs has reduced a lot, and my thighs feel firmer, a little dimple or two are still there so it wasn't completely eliminated but then again my diet hasn't exactly been stellar of late.

Claim 2: Reduces Water Intention
Yes, yes and yessss. I still think this is probably the best  part about these products, they really minimise bloating,  I sleep in them after gluttony dinners and my stomach won't be bloated the next day :)

Claim 3: Tones and Moisturises
This is still not really anything I have anything to say much about .....my skin is always dry in winter and it was still dry throughout these 52 days.

Claim 4: Regulates Body Temperature
Yes but bear in mind that the fabric is not wind blocking, if it is the warmth factor you are after, wear another layer on top,  I feel really comfortable when I wear them

To Summarise: I still think these products are a great, amazing invention and in fact I'm thinking of getting a capri pair of leggings / shorts to wear over the summer period :D

These products are available to purchase in Malta - ‘Proskins Malta’ on Facebook or call 9983 2022.

Simshar : Simshar lands on the Big Screen for the very FIRST time

I don't want to sound in any way full of myself cause generally sometimes i feel quite the opposite BUT this month I am considering myself to be a very lucky girl indeed, not only do I get to be the style blogger of the Simshar premiere and learn about the film industry and have oodles of fun BUT I got to watch the movie early yesterday with the rest of the crew. Guys seriously ....my opinion has zero to do with my affiliation to the premiere ... this movie ROCKS....the crappy part is I got so engrossed in the story and the various plots being unfolded that I umm kind of missed a lot of details, such as diff outfits, props etc....I only realised this when I visited the exhibition after and not much was familiar.

The exhibition curated by Martina Guillaumier (set designer for the movie) is set up at the Embassy Complex Valletta and if you're in the neighbourhood and in any way interested in how film sets are put together, I suggest you pop by. It is curated really well with lots of details...set titbits of information and a nice little mix of humour thrown in. It might be a good idea to watch it before watching the movie as then you'll actually watch out for these details in the movie and not miss them like me.

Here are some photos of the exhibition...although I snapped a lot more I'm only giving you a sneak peak..I want you to see the actual exhibition as it's a totally different feel - seeing a photo and seeing the actual thing.

Random Post : Proskins Slim - 24 days later - My Review

I was planning on writing my review on the Proskins Slim Clothes after the 28 day challenge had passed but have already gotten way too many requests from all of you asking me how I'm finding them --- so I decided that you're getting this review now and since I have no intention of stopping to wear these clothes..you can get another one in 10 days time.

So first of all lets start with what I did - I wore the top and leggings for 8 hours a day minimum, generally longer for 24 days. I sometimes slept in them, but in general, I found this not to be as comfy as sleeping with my pjs.

So lets review the claims individually

Claim 1: Reduces the Appearance of Cellulite
They Worked!! I was quite impressed by this - I saw a change after just two weeks in the  on my legs and I think it has reduced by quite a bit, there's still a bit left but I think this will probably go as I continue to wear them. I had expected them to take much longer to work.

Claim 2: Reduces Water Intention
YES !!! This is probably the best and worst part about these products, let me rephrase, they are the best and worst things to wear after a big meal. Best because they really work and help minimise bloating and worst because they feel uncomfortable around your expanded stomach. I slept in them after a few big dinners and the difference in how bloated my stomach was the day after amazed me....

Claim 3: Tones and Moisturises
Not really sure about this one, I did feel the tonality of the skin on my thighs improved but I'm also a regular gym goer and the type of workouts I do (I change these around) also makes a difference...re moisturising, I still got dry skin, not sure if this is less or the same than when I don't wear them.

Claim 4: Regulates Body Temperature
Yes and No: The top is an excellent base layer...I tend to freeze and this really makes a difference, it keeps me warm in cold environments and at the same time I don't start sweating in stuffy places or when the lovely bright sun is out. The fabric is however not in any way wind blocking so when I wore the leggings alone, I still felt cold especially in the wind..however, when I wore them under thin tights they worked much better and I was super comfy running around in them all day in Florence.

Lots of you have asked me how to wear them..I wear them under shorts, under skirts, under long tunic tops, under loose fitting trousers and once even under jeans!

Wearing My Proskins!

To Summarise: I think these products are a great, amazing invention and I will definitely purchase again when they've run their course...brilliant way to shape up for bikini season

These products are available to purchase in Malta - ‘Proskins Malta’ on Facebook or call 9983 2022.

Random Post : Car Breakdown and Paris

This morning I had a minor meltdown - maybe minor isn't the correct adjective..my steering wheel locked and the car was unable to turn in the right direction, this in itself was scary enough and was already causing the start of a meltdown but after inquiries I found out I might have to be car-less for a few weeks...and then the meltdown got worse...In hindsight I am the first to acknowledge this as being irrational...we don't have the best public transport system in Malta, but we have one; buses exist...I also have a network of family and friends who would give me lifts but it just shows how much my car means to me..how much I feel my life revolves around it, how important I perceive 'being able to journey from place to place in as little a time as possible' to be.

When I travel on the other hand I never want to rent a car..I see it as largely useless especially if I travel to cities..but most places have trains...and trains I love more than cars..they get you there even faster with no traffic and no parking hassles...can we get a metro system in Malta? Please?

As some of you might know, I recently got older and reached the big  3 0....I escaped and ran off to Paris to ensure I am somewhere where it will be impossible to feel sad - and it worked! 8 glorious days in Paris - fun, art, culture, fashion, shopping, food and Disney and I feel re-energised and very inspired. As far as fashion is concerned..I feel that Paris is truly unsurpassed both in terms of the person on the street, in terms of the up and coming local talent and of course the big names.

I traveled to Paris with my darling hubby Kurt Paris who truly made me feel like a little princess..he also had his camera handy so here are some of my fave pics which he snapped.....some outfit posts to follow along with lots of planned exhibition and designer review posts :)

Random Post : Turning 30 and a Wishlist

The day is soon here, the day I no longer form part of either the teen or twenteeen club but join the ranks of 'the more mature' thirty club; I will now start ticking the other box. Truth be told, I'm not scared of getting older, I'm happy with my life and feel like I'm making the most of every part of it..but somehow 30 still feels like a bit of a big deal.

Normally, over the years, I have always kept stating I am x years old until the actual day of my birthday at which time it turns to x+1 but this time for some reason, for the past few months, when asked my age, the number 30 has been exiting my mouth....maybe I've been subconsciously preparing myself for what I feel is a bit of a life milestone.

I used to think that my image would change when I reached 30, that I'd definitely be wearing different clothes, wearing my hair differently (that part is currently true but it's only temp) and whilst of course my style has evolved over the years..I'm not sure 'tuning 30' is having anything to do with it...however I will say that as I grow older I am understanding my body more and more and leaning to buy more 'investment pieces', favouring quality over quantity and not wasting money over fads.

With this in mind no birthday of mine could ever be complete without a dream wishlist..here are my top ten wishes ...I might buy myself one of these babies..after all I have to give myself a gift right?

30th birthday wishlist
Left to Right: Hermes Scarf/ Chanel necklace/ Chanel Classic Flap Bag/Miu Miu coat/ Louboutin Pumps/ Michael Kors Watch in rose gold/ Coccinelle Pink bag with gold chain/ Coccinelle Wallet/ Kenzo Eye Sweater
