Malta Fashion Week : Ritienne Zammit : 2015

Ritienne Zammit's A/W 15 collection surprised me. I entered backstage expecting to see highly creative pieces that wouldn't be entirely wearable, that would be more of an artistic expression than anything else. I was pleasantly surprised - the creativity is still there but this collection is much more wearable,  a lot cleaner than her previous work, a touch more refined and a touch more mature.

The collection is inspired by Maltese patriotism and poets, especially by Dun Mikiel Xerri a Maltese patriot who was involved in an unsuccessful revolt to overthrow French rule under Napoleon Bonaparte. He was captured and later executed. Other names made an appearance within the collection, namely Manwel Dimech and the national poet Dun Karm who wrote our National Anthem.

If I had to pick my favourite thing about any of Ritienne's collection is how strong her story always is, the theme and the colour flow have absolutely no holes in them, at no point will you ever stop and think 'Wait, where did that pop out from?'  This collection is no exception and I loved her colour palette of grey, white, pinks and teal.

There's also lots of symbolism to be found within the different pieces - newspaper-style prints and slogans, Maltese words, beating hearts, and of course the odd t-shirt with Dun Mikiel's face plastered all over it.

The models wore finger-wave vintage hairstyles and fake moustaches, harking back to the days gone by and the finale piece had one model representing Dun Mikiel Xerri himself, walking down in an ghonella-style jumpsuit made entirely of Maltese writing print. Something else to mention is the dark humour to be found in some of the prints - the heart and face prints feel wistfully comical in an ironic tone.

The pieces themselves cater for a variety of different shapes and preferences and there's a lot of contrast to be found. The range varies from culottes - combining wool and silver metallic fabrics and pink fur patches, a pink fur coat with different shades of pink and fur styles, tailored jackets and loose fitting shift dresses and palazzo pants.

It is not just the wearability factor that has improved this year but also the quality of the finishing of the product as well as her choice of fabrics. Well done Ritienne - I look forward to the next one.

Outfit Post : All About Lipsticks & Dresses

I make no secret of the fact that I love dresses and as much as I enjoy pairing different items together and creating an outfit, sometimes, all I want to wear is a pretty dress with a nice pair of heels.

This dress, is, as I like to say a 'very me' dress, by a brand Elizabetta Franchi, that I've had my eye on for a while. The pieces have a certain style and finesse that really appeals to me.

Whilst buying the dress, I spotted the Alberto Guardiani shoes in the same store (Rebelli). I had posted some photos of these 'lipstick shoes' on Facebook and Instagram when I went to Milan Fashion Week. I had really wanted to buy a pair back then but was too overweight (luggage).

So once again, when I realised the brand is available in Malta and this was the last pair and in my size, well then you know - they had to be mine. These are the summer stock - the new Winter ones arriving are even more fun because they're got different coloured heels - pink / blue / green.

I had my hair styled a bit differently today, lots more volume and a few curls - what do you think ?

Malta Fashion Week : Caroline Hili : 2015

It was another jam packed house last night at the official Mercedez-Benz evening with Caroline Hili. Caroline's show last year was one of the most talked about so anticipation was high. The setting, venue and ligting was incredible - Lascaris Wharf is stunning, and I loved the brilliant concept of the models travelling down, the steel lift, down the bastions followed by perfectly matched lighting.

So what about the collection?

There is no doubt that Caroline is a master at the craft of tailoring, pattern cutting and construction. Her skill is in crafting pieces to fit the female body the exact way she has envisioned it. Perfectly nipped in waists with contrasting voluminous skirts, flowing fabrics and cuts that cling in places and flow in others were the order of the night. She presented a range of items - from trench coats to party pieces to even more toned down items I can see working as 'day pieces'.

Compared to last year's collection, this one is a lot less safe and maybe to some people, much less wearable. This year she has let her imagination run a bit wilder, and whether or not each piece tickles your fancy - the collection can definitively not be called ordinary. I was pleased by her use of contrasting materials - there were sheer fabrics, leather pieces, metallic detailing and even a huge tulle skirt for the finale piece. I also spotted some lovely accessories on a few of the pieces, accessories are actually one of Caroline's forte. Her work is all very clean and thankfully there's never a sense of anything feeling overdone.

One thing that really caught my attention is that barring the finale piece, all the lines were very long, each piece had a sense of infinity, of seeming to exist beyond the scope of itself.

Caroline thinks a bit differently to other designers and prior to the show she did not divulge her inspiration nor the story behind the collection, she preferred to let the audience create their own interpretation. I personally don't fully agree with this, the theme is not an obvious one and I don't think it could have been easily picked up. A consequence of her decision and this is something I did hear a few people mention, is that as the show moved from pieces to piece, it might have felt a bit disjointed and lacking of a running concept.

I did however speak to her after the show and she shared her thoughts with me. Her designs were heavily influenced by the current happenings in Malta, especially in regards to the Spring Hunting referendum debate over the last few months. Her play on colours and styling evokes the birds themselves (those eyelashes!) and the natural behaviour of the Maltese people as a whole to always be divided in opinion (contrasting colours). The single red dress signifies the blood shed in the killings of these birds.

Malta Fashion Week : Ferragiu & Nilara : 2015

Tonight's show was quite a lovely one, the location was great and the setup was very visually appealing. The show showcased two designers with very different styles. Both designers however have great workmanship and high quality tailoring in common. It was a pleasure to watch both of them tonight.

Juliana Scerri Ferrante describes Ferragiu's second collection as evoking the Renaissance time period and that sense of artistic extravagance is quite obviously present within her patterns and designs. I'm not really going to delve into reviewing her work as I work too closely with Juliana (the designer of Ferragiu) in various fashion matters for it not to sound biased but I will just say that I loved the beautiful silk patterns and flowing pieces. Here are my favourite picks.

This was my absolute favourite - I want to throw the model out and crawl into that photo myself in her place. I really like the combination fo the different fabrics and colours.

Next up was Nilaya and I give Nilay Topai Camilleri a big thumbs up, I feel she really stepped up to the plate and designed an excellent collection. There was good music, an interesting theme - 'Paint It Black' and a continuing story line and colour concept that flowed from one piece to the other. Not all the pieces are wearable, some are a little too dramatic to be worn off the catwalk but there are quite a few dresses that I would quite love to wear to some fabulous party.

One thing that struck me about this collection is how it celebrated the female form, albeit some of the pieces require a perfect female form but they drape the body in such a way that enhances and flatters existing curves. There's some lovely intricate detailing on many of the pieces and I especially enjoyes seeing how the gorgeous lace fabrics were worked within the pieces.

Malta Fashion Week 2015 - What's On & What To Wear

So it's that time of year again - when Malta devotes an entire week to celebrating and showcasing local fashion and some international fashion too. For those who don't really understand what Malta Fashion Week is, you can read this post I wrote a few weeks ago that elaborates a bit more on the whole affair. Then hop on back here to learn about the calender of events for 2015 and if you're a woman - what to wear to said events.

CALENDAR

If you're somehow connected to the event then it kicks off with a private launch party on the 8th May. This usually involves a bit too much celebration and somewhat of a hangover the next day.

9th May Day 1
The official open-to-the-public event kicks off the next day with two events. At Pjazza San Gorg in Valletta, a stunning open-air photography exhibition will be officially opened, exhibiting some stunning works by both local and international photographers.

Across the sea, in the evening at 20:00 at Pjazza Tigne a fashion show promoting the stores of The Point will take place

What To Wear
- This show will be presenting many different high street brands with highly different collections so I think this will be a fun one to have a bit of 'fashion fun' and experiment a little.

10th May Day 2
On Day 2 it's all happening at MCC,  at 17:00 prospective brides and wedding aficionados are in for a treat as CF7, Farage, Bridal Creations' and Ivory & Co are all going to be dressing the fashion week models in one beautiful gown after another. This is a good opportunity for any bride-to-be to see a huge variety of different styles of gowns in one place. If you ae a bride-to-be try and get a feel for which style you think you might like to wear and what would suit you. It's also Mother's day so this might be a nice one to bring mummy along as a guest.

Later on, in the evening, one of my favourites of the lot - it's the New Designers Show - time to see what Malta's emerging, new talent has to offer.

What To Wear
This is rather a long day and my guess is a lot of you will be coming straight from Sunday lunch sooo I suggest something loose and comfy to hide any food babies.

11th May Day 3
And on Day 3 it's a double bill at Ordanance Street by Ferragiu and Nilara. Ferragiu is a young brand that is offering high end, exclusive designs using luxury fabrics, her last collection was very interesting so ddefinitelyone to watch out for. Nilara is presently mainly known as a very popular shop in Malta selling mainly attire for evening parties / weddings, for this event a big heads up - she is launching her couture line at Fashion Week, I was lucky enough to see some preliminary sketches and they look fabulous.

What To Wear
The mood and vibe of this event is likely to be a bit more formal, so I suggest something a bit smart, perhaps a smart jumpsuit and blazer or a dress and blazer, and I also suggest adding a very nice bag

12th May Day 4
And on Day 4 it's two shows once again. At the Malta Society of Arts Nadege Renee Cassar will present her high end, innovative jewelry designs. Right after, at the Malta Chamber of Commerce, it's a triple bill by Maltese designer Marco Parascandalo, Julia Boikova and Indian designer Sai Suman. Marco already has quite a following in Malta and a little birdie told me he's heading in a slightly different direction this time round sooooo I'm definitely curious.

What To Wear
With a varied and interesting mix of designers, this one is a bit harder to get a feel on what the vibe will be like but my guess is that for this one it's time to pull out something a bit interesting and different - let's have some fashion.

13th May Day 5
Caroline Hili is up next at the Barakka Lift, Lascaris Wharf. Her collection last year was a very big hit so expectations are high for this one.

What To Wear
For some reason I'm finding this a bit difficult to decide, a lot of the guests will be dressed smartly but Caroline loves innovation. I'd say go for something that embraces femininity and expresses your individuality.

14th May Day 6
The highly imaginative Ritienne Zammit is showcasing at the stunning Grandmaster's Palace followed by a private event organised by luxury multi-brand store Sarto at an undisclosed location.

What To Wear
This one depends on whether you're attending both shows or not. For Ritienne's show something eclectic and interesting would be perfectly suited but the Sarto events calls for something a bit luxurious, slightly more formal.

15th May Day 7
And on the last day of fashion week we play host to a select group of International Designers and there are designers flying in from London, Paris, Serbia, New York and Nigeria - bound to be a highly versatile and interesting show.

What To Wear
Again this has a very varied lineup but traditionally the crowd for this event tends to be quite smarty dressed so I'd say leave the jeans at home for this one.

Right after fashion week on Saturday 16th the Malta Fashion Awards happens - all the designers from the week just passed present a small subset of their collections along with hair shows and of course award presentations.

Difference between Malta Fashion Week & Malta Fashion Awards

BRIDAL -2014 - Photo by KURT PARIS

The difference between Malta Fashion Week & Malta Fashion Awards might seem obvious to some. However, I've lost count of the number of times I've had to verbally explain to different people that there are two events in Malta and that going to the Saturday Night Awards Night does not mean you've attended Malta Fashion Week and sampled all that our local designers have to offer.

As the name implies, Fashion Week is something that happens over the span of an approximate week. In London, although still called a fashion WEEK, it is actually 5 days, in Milan 6, in Paris 8 ..you get the gist. In Malta, the length has varied from 7 - 8 days. A fashion week, in general, is one whereby on each day, there will be one or more shows showcasing both local and international designers. Presentations, parties and receptions might also feature into the mix. In large fashion weeks there might be something like 30 different official events happening on each day. In Malta, seeing as we cater to a far smaller population, it is generally 1 or 2. The Awards Night happens right after Fashion Week, on the final Saturday and is a small showcase of what happened throughout Fashion Week. There are also a number of other presentations, such as hair shows and of course the awards themselves.

FASHION AWARDS - 2014 - Photo by MIKLOS XUEREB

In Malta, first came the Fashion Awards, back in 1997, 17 years ago. The fashion awards were immediately popular, happening once a year and gaining a larger audience each year. Five years ago, Malta Fashion Week was created and it's been happening once yearly ever since. Since the awards night is the original event, it is the one event which most Maltese people are familiar with and thereby attend. Whilst it is great that a large audience attends this night, I fear that  a lot of people haven't actually understood that there are many more events in the days prior to the awards night. Tickets to the Fashion Week events are actually free !! It's just a matter of booking your place with the organisers and this last bit is important, especially for the more popular ones as these tend to get booked out within a few days.

On the individual days, during Fashion Week, the designers get a chance to showcase a larger amount of pieces from their collections, in a more intimate setting. If you are truly interested in learning about a designer, attending the individual show will better serve this purpose.

Throughout fashion week, there are also events such as  the extremely popular and always booked out New Designers. Over here, new, emerging designers showcase pieces as a means of participating in the New Designer Competition, awarded on the awards night.

The Bridal show is also a popular one, especially with prospective brides and one of my favourites is the International Designers Night which showcases different designers from all corners of the world.

The dates for this year's events are from the 9th May to the 16th May and a little birdie has told me that the calendar of events will soon be launched so keep your eyes and ears peeled for more info.
