Urban Travel : In the Fitting Room Vol 2

As I mentioned last week, as the Urban Travel collaboration with #MEXX now comes to an end, I decided to end with something a bit different for 2015 - I'm taking you with me into the changing / fitting / dressing room !!

Whenever I'm shopping, the thing I hate most is 'trying on' and there are times when I break one of my own rules and simply skip that part. However, when I do enter, sometimes I'll decide instantly, other times I'll spend about 10 minutes craning my neck trying to see whether or not my bum looks big.

Last week I chose a long, casual, sweater dress that's a bit fitted. This week I've changed tune completely and I've migrated into a woolly, casual, chunky cardigan that hides all your sins. The great thing about this cardigan sweater is that you can wear it EVERYWHERE - to work, out shopping, to the cinema, to a friend's house...& you can wear it with many different colours -  black, denim, white, purple, navy. I also chose a black leather clutch bag that's really stylish.

The best part - MEXX is on sale now !!

Styling Work : The Elf - Ilsien in-Nisa Weekly

As some of you may know, I've been writing for the Ilisen in-Nisa Weekly for the last three months. I've also styled two fashion editorials - the first one was all about Maltese designers and this second one is all about Playful Fashion - A Dark and Brooding Elf. Both these shoots were printed in a special December issue that's still on sale in Malta at Agenda and 8TillLate (proceeds go to charity).

For those who haven't yet bought the magazine, here's the result of the photoshoot - shot by Kurt Paris. The model is the stunning Michela Buhajar (supernova.com), Makeup by Mateja Camilleri and Hair by Alexander Carabott. We shot this shoot in Viscount Toy Store Valletta.

The concept is a dark and brooding one, with an element of surrealism, a dark elf surrounded by children's toys just before Christmas. Kurt had the brilliant idea of shooting this editorial in monochrome which fitted the theme perfectly.

I styled the looks using mainly dark colours with an element of monochrome. I played around with different textures, sequins, leather finished, shiny fabric and fur. All these products are available locally and I also used pieces from two of our local designers Marco Parascandalo and Rosemarie Abela

Sweater, Leggings : Marco Parascandalo

Scarf : MEXX

Jacket : Rosemarie Abela

Leggings, Shoes : Model’s Own

Waistcoat : Lui Jo

Leggings : Miss Selfridge

Trousers : Miss Selfridge

Coat : MEXX

Dress : Promod

Above and Below : Jacket : Marco Parascandalo

Trousers : Liu Jo

This is a fantasy world and this fashion editorial is just a little peep into that world. Which is your favourite look ?

Urban Travel : In the Fitting Room

As the Urban Travel collaboration with #MEXX draws to a close I've decided to end with something a bit different. For these last two installments, I'm taking you with me into the changing / fitting / dressing room.

I know I'm not alone, it's not the first time I've seen people snap pictures in changing rooms, trying to see angles their bodies don't allow them to see or even sending pics to other people to get second opinions.

For this post, I chose a long casual sweater dress that's a bit fitted, this is something I would want to try on and also something I would obsess over, as to whether or not I look bigger in it. I shot a series of selfies that I would take, had I needed that second opinion.

I also chose a bag and amazing pair of gloves that I would wear it with.

Urban Travel : Little Black Dress

MEXX have the perfect LBD (little black dress) in stock and it can be worn a 100 different ways - ok maybe not a 100, but a few.... To showcase this versatility, I recruited Selena Laferla as my human mannequin - Selena is a pretty, young, blonde girl who loves clothes & fashion and has a great smile.

Back to the LBD - a well-fitting, little black dress of good quality is an investment piece, it will serve you well and accompany you loyally to many different events and parties, so much more so, if you change the way you wear it each time by switching accessories around.
So in this week's issue of Urban Travel with #MEXX we start with a LBD (first pic) and go about transforming it....

Amendment One Above : - Add a coat - in our case - a houndstooth coat with a fur collar. A good coat is essential when venturing outdoors in the colder months of the year and this one is both stylish and wearable.

Amendment 2 Above: - We're indoors now so no coat and back to the LBD (little black dress) - we add a scarf and a beanie and transform the LBD outfit into a casual outfit good for a trip to the cinema / home party etc

Amendment 3 Above: - Change scarf yet again - a black scarf blends in with the black dress more and draws less attention away from the dress than the previous patterned one - therefore rendering the overall look less casual. It is still somewhat more casual than wearing the dress by itself though, so it's a great way to dress it down slightly when you're not 100% sure of the dress code, plus it adds warmth.

Amendment 4 Above: - Add a beautiful blazer - this outfit is perfect for an art exhibition launch / a reception / a dinner. I left the black scarf on for this look but you can play it by ear depending on how formal the occasion - the higher the formality, the higher the likelihood that you shouldn't wear the scarf.

Urban Travel : Shopping at Xmas

You may have realised that I love coats - it's a good thing that I feel very, very cold as otherwise in Malta I wouldn't get to enjoy them for that long a period. I do like a red coats, especially at Christmas time, so much fun, festive spirit and instant mood-uplifting. You also may have realised that I like faux fur since of late it's been making quite an appearance in my outfits...

Sooooo this is another episode of Urban Travel with MEXX and this time it's an outfit for a morning spent shopping around in Valletta, whilst drinking green tea and sucking lollipops ....lollipops and green tea are fast becoming my diet staples.

I love the style of this coat, it's so original, with the tucked in waist and tulip share, it's almost like a dress.

Urban Travel : Men in CAMOUFLAGE

In another episode of Urban Travel with MEXX - this time it's all about menswear and the focus is on the camouflage pattern with a denim super-interesting twist. This outfit, which I styled, is all about being comfortable but fashion forward, a relaxed vibe with a smart, chic look. This is the type of outfit a guy would wear to hang around, go for lunch, watch a movie, maybe a spot of shopping. The burgundy colour offsets the camo pattern and navy blue perfectly keeps the outfit interesting.

Our man of the hour is Umar Khaan, a student, originally from Pakistan but moved to Malta ten years ago - his style is typically 'smart casual', I've styled him a total #MEXX look.

Urban Travel : Switching into Your Alter Ego

Superheroes have alter egos and an alter ego requires an outfit change. The first outfit is always polished, groomed and sleek, designed to both blend and impress.

But when fighting crime, Superman and Batman both wear capes, my cape is a sleeveless anorak - I'm definitely the winner in the power stakes here.

Superheroes have secret powers, my power is in my handbag. I could elaborate but it's a secret.

In my groomed alter ego, I wear a matching suit from MEXX, a current hot fashion potato (yes matching is back), the shirt style is called a pussy-bow shirt (no joke) and is another hot potato - a large bow adds a touch of vintage chic glamour and I'm loving burgundy/ wine / oxblood which seems to be the only pop of colour available this season. This outfit is great for a dinner date that counts / an exhibition launch / theatre night.

The superhero outfit, also from MEXX is great for fighting crime, exercising all your spending powers and just general chilling, switch the pair of jeans to a skirt for another alter feminine ego.
