London Fashion Week : Backstage at James Kelly

On the first day at London Fashion Week, the Toni & Guy team invited me backstage to watch them prepare the different hairstyles for the James Kelly Merit Award at Fashion Scout.

It's always really interesting to be backstage at fashion shows - the preparation and attention to detail is impressive. The hair and makeup styling begins hours before the actual show and still sometimes preparations run late.

The Toni & Guy team started three hours before the show time, they used LABELM products and created soft waves with a braid at the side and a soft middle parting. The hair style is soft and somewhat 'undone' which in general seems to be the hair trend for next winter - gone are the days of polished, set hair styles, now it's all about relaxed hair with a bit of attitude.

James Kelly is the winner of Fashion Scout's prestigious Merit Award - his clothes are exciting with a very big nod towards masculinity. The oversized jackets are extremely interesting with a wonderful play on volume and different patterns, his work is highly innovative and he has definitely spent a length of time researching and developing hi ideas for outerwear.. The dress in the very last picture is brilliantly asymmetrical - this is one very talented up and coming designer.

Events : Backstage at Ferramoda

Yesterday, at Ferramoda, the designer artisan, luxury brand Ferragiu launched in Malta for the very first time. Also, showcasing at the event were designers Lucia De Su and Anton Guilio Grande. I was working backstage which means some backstage sneak moments right before the girls went out onto the catwalk. Models from supernova.
The first set of coloured photos all show clothes by Ferragiu. The second set of b&w photos all show clothes by Anton Guilio Grande. More catwalk photos of all three designers to follow soon.

Events Post : LFW : Backstage at GYO YUNI KIMCHOE

I was invited backstage at the London Fashion Week Fashion Scout Merit Award Show by Toni&Guy, the merit award winner is GYOYUNI KIMCHOE. I've been backstage at many fashion shows over the years, I've worked backstage most of the time I've been backstage, at London Fashion Week the great thing is that I got to go backstage, both for this publication and for Noctis Magazine a few times, simply as a writer. My only purpose was to watch..it's actually really interesting..watching the designer working with the stylist and watching the makeup team work hand in hand with the hair team.

You also pick up a few pointers, like how the Toni&Guy LABELM team (lead by Celia) were using a hair net to set the hair so as to avoid it puffing up.

The hair look mirrored the strong design element in the collection with strong, angular styling. To get the look visit their step-by-step guide.

I also got to speak to the designer about the inspiration behind his collection and he explained how his collection revolves around the good gardener, the gardener who doesn't kill weeds as typical gardeners would do, instead as a soldier in war would help his enemies, this gardner grows weeds. His collection is a symbol and hope for peace . The colours across the collection are earthy, lots of neutrals and khaki shades, and lots of green of course. There are details such as military buttons, large pockets with trimmings. The image is touch, androgynous but with a tough of femininity in some details such as the frills and florals.

Outfit Post : Welcoming the UGLY SHOE Trend

First off, apologies because this post should have been published a few weeks ago but as you may have noticed, I'm on a bit of a downtime at the moment - trying to take some more time off and enjoy life's little luxuries like football, a good book and sun and well of course a spot of shopping here and there. Relaxing time notwithstanding though, I decided it's time to publish this post before it expires - so here goes.

You maybe have noticed that there are a lot of 'ugly shoes' floating around this summer...well not really ugly imo but that's how the trend that encompasses Teva, Birkenstocks and Prada sporty-type sandals has been nicknamed.

I've actually always had a soft spot for this style of shoe and I think it works wonderfully with certain outfits, infact I bought my first pair of Birkenstocks back in 2008 when celebrities had made them a bit popular (nothing like this season's popularity though).

Jogging your memory to a post I wrote a month of so ago, when I featured a shoe shop that sells comfortable shoes (Anastasi in Valletta), I did mention that I went home with something to wear backstage at Malta Fashion Week and wear them I did...these photos were all taken backstage during one of the events I worked in.

I'm also wearing a striped top under a denim dress which I think is actually quite cool ..what do you think ?

OUTFIT POST : MALTA FASHION AWARDS - A DRESS & THE PIECE-OF-ART SHOES

Last Saturday the Malta Fashion Awards happened and of course in terms of getting dressed up and our wardrobes, for a lot of us, the day marks one of the biggest nights of the year. In my case, the night was very complicated - I was working backstage (the sufferance of a fashion stylist) and for such a big and long event that means coordinating what was going on and making sure the models get ready etc which ultimately means waaaay too much running and walking around. I was also nominated for two awards which meant I needed to walk the red carpet at the start of the show and also be on standby when the winners of those categories were announced. It honestly felt like I needed to be in two places, in different clothes at the same time.

On my last trip to the UK I had encountered a British design house JOLABY and bought a beautiful dress from them. I also recently bought a really interesting pair of shoes (you may recall a facebook status about them and them being called a piece-of-art) and the two came together for the night along with a pair of vintage earrings.

I must admit - the shoes came off my feet to be replaced by trusty Birkenstocks, at some points throughout the evening but the dress was super comfortable. My hair and makeup was done on site by the awards team - hair by Mario Muscat, make up by Terry under Elaine Galea's supervision.

I didn't get to see much of the show but it felt like we pulled off an amazing night and everyone seemed impressed - a note of celebration is that the hubby, Kurt Paris, the one who takes 3/4 of the photos on this blog took home Best Fashion Photographer of the year...wohoooooo.
