Interview : Marisa Grima - New Ventures

Marisa Grima needs no introduction and has in fact already been interviewed on this blog a number of times. Recent happenings, both with her agency SupernovaModel and a new project called Aura have led me to believe we should meet with her once again to get all the new gossip about these exciting ventures.

Marisa, how would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you or heard of you ?
Passionate, simply love anything creative, loyal, eclectic, different, fun, happy:)

Your modelling agency supernova has been around for a few years now ..any plans to expand or any exciting upcoming projects ?
Supernova Model Agency is my baby, I have been scouting models for as long as I can remember.
"Noelene and myself are constantly working towards making sure our models land the best jobs. "

We are also working with a number of foreign agencies and model scouts, to place our models
abroad.

How do you go about assigning a model to a job ? I s it the client who choose or do you give your own recommendations ?
It depends on the job really. We have clients who request models by name, we have clients who ask for recommendations based on specific requirements, or they leave the choice up to us. When the latter happens, we try to fit the model to the job required.

If the job description asks for a bubbly fun model, there is no point in sending a model that is shy.

That is why it is important to know our models well and build a close relationship with them.

We’ve heard through the grapevine that besides supernova, you’ve also just launched an exciting project AURA  - give us the gossip

AURA came about due to a number of reasons,  my father passed away and I inherited a property in Naxxar Rd, BKara. It was a question of either selling, renting it out or doing something with it myself. Opening a clothes shop was out of the question, I do not want to go there, even though it is my line and my job.

The solution came about by itself really. Last year, I met, purely by chance, Robert Aguis, a very stylish, cool person. I had no clue he was a trained hairstylist, but I loved the way his style. We started talking, and one thing led to another and voila AURA was born. AURA Hair & Beauty Salon offers a getaway from everyday stresses. The design of the salon is very relaxing, eclectic and calm.

I hate black in a salon, and when I was deciding on the interior decoration, one thing I noticed is that many salons had a lot of black in their interiors.
"I will be spending time in it as much as I can as I love it! "

In the morning as soon as I wake up, I go there, have some tea, sit on the sofa and start working from there.

What should people keep in mind when choosing a hairstyle ?
I think that is more a question Robert should be answering, but from experience I would say hair
texture, facial features and lifestyle.

________________________________________________________________________

Now for some personal info,  What do you eat for breakfast each morning ?
I skip breakfast but drink tea with no milk only.

What makes you angry ?
Ignorance

What excites you ?
My job.

What is the first thing you look for when scouting a model?
Height, size and an interesting face. Not necessarily beautiful though.

What are you looking forward to most in 2015 ?
More work, health and being happy:):):)

That's it folks ... leave me a comment to let me know what you think of this post !!

Outfit Post : Diaries of the Weekend

Last weekend was quite an eventful one - first up I was a guest on Malta Llejla (the TV Show on NET TV). Right after I made my way to the Lilly Mae fashion show (more on that to come) and right after that I attended the 202 Sif Jakobs Launch Event....that was followed by a meal at Scolgitti where I got to witness a great storm whilst eating divine pasta with lobster .

The next day I woke up and made my way to the wedding of a very good friend of mine..lovely luncheon at Villa Arrigo. That evening I also had a disco-themed hen night. And the next day it was an early start for a photoshoot styling job. Follow it all through a few too many photos.

Events Post : Sif Jakobs & 202 & Valletta

sif jakobs

Recently, on a random day, I spent an hour simply walking around Valletta at night, with no particular destination in mind. I love Valletta so this isn't about some revelation as to how beautiful Malta's Capital City is but for a Sunday evening I was impressed by how lively it was, how many people were out and about, how music was playing in various places..just what fun it was. It truly reminded me of parts of Rome, a city that I adore, Valletta has really lifted itself out of the social black hole it had once become.

It's no wonder that Sif Jakobs fell in love with Malta and Valletta whilst on holiday in Malta last November, so much so that she decided she wanted to work with Malta and even more so when she stumbled upon 202 Jewellers in Valletta, a beautiful shop that's really put an effort into stylish decor and excellent lighting. They got in touch and started dealings only last February but her jewellery is already here at 202 Jewellers Santa Lucia Valletta and last night 202 Jewellers organised a lovely reception which spilled out onto the streets of Valletta, excellent food and all the works. The jewellery is super stylish and very chic, some lovely pieces..so let's get cracking and see some photos.

I really enjoyed meeting Sif herself, born in Iceland and educated as a goldsmith in Sweden she cites her various travels as her inspiration, in particular Italy which she refers to as her second home. The jewellery range has a sense of minimalism and reminds me very much of Nordic design. I particularly love the leather bracelets, they're a popular trend in general but I see so many ugly, cheap-looking ones, these are really stylish and the quality and finishing of the products is top notch.

Shopping Post : It's CATWALK time with ARMANI JEANS

For this week's edition of Caroline hits a store and shows you what's in stock I'm doing something different...first off over the next couple of weeks I'm too too busy to actually go to stores and take photos #fashionshowmonth ..and I decided that as part of my ongoing collaboration with Armani Jeans Malta - I'm going to post my favourite looks from the fashion show held at the Point last Thursday evening. It was a lovely event btw but although I would have loved to sit in the audience and sip the proscecco that was given out,  I was working, as a stylist, assisting Marisa Grima backstage. Hair by Dean Gera, Make Up Store and Models from supernovamodels.com. All photos by Kurt Paris.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this pretty 2-piece suit and t-shirt combo

This swimsuit is chic-fabulous and just makes me think of beaching in Nice or the French Riviera, sipping cocktails or champagne on some huge yacht...*sigh*.. I think it should be combined with a big floppy hat too and maybe some diamond studs...is the hubby reading ?
I've actually used this jumpsuit once for a fashion shoot I styled for Style Magazine..it's one of my fave pieces in the whole shop currently, the vivid pattern is really right up my alley

A really lovely summer suit

Sometimes denim and white is all that's needed

More men should pick up on this jacket and shorts styling - it's so cool, especially on tall men

Watch this space for the Hilfiger Denim edition.

Armani Jeans Stores can also at Baystreet (obviously at the Point too but this is a post about the Point fashion show). I also will put forward this modern method idea of keeping in touch with them  through social media and stuff and therefore press LIKE here

Events Post : Fashion For a Cause

Alexia wearing Victor Azzopardi Jewellers

It's official May has become FASHION month in Malta - I'm not quite sure how this happened..it isn't that way in foreign countries...our fashion awards and later our fashion week always took place in May so maybe that started it all, or maybe the fact that the weather has started to get nice and sunny but the intense summer heat hasn't started yet, either way, for whatever reason(s) May in Malta = Fashion.

This means that besides the super exciting and soon-approaching fashion week, there are a number of other fashion shows and events taking place around the island throughout May, the first of which took place yesterday. Fashion For a Cause as it is titled, is organised yearly by MYN media (Marisa Grima, Yvonne Desira Buttigieg and Noelene Miggiani) and this year was in aid of Marigold Foundation. The show was set up in the form of a tea party at Villa Francia under the patronage of Mrs Michelle Muscat. The place is stunning...really really beautiful...I'm always amazed when I discover yet another beautiful building in Malta, we really are lucky to have such a wealth of heritage in our country.

The brands which participated in this show were ALDO shoes, LIST ROMA, Massimo Dutti, Pronovias, Marks&Spencer, Victor Azzopardi Jewellers, Monsoon. The event kicked off with a stylish tea party in the back garden followed by a lovely catwalk show in the front garden with models from supernovamodel.com styled by Marisa. I really liked the setting of this catwalk, it felt different somehow and really appropriate for the occassion.

I didn't actually get to watch the show..I was backstage working away but the clothes from up close looked absolutely LOVELY...loved Marisa's styling and loved the actual clothes; soooo many pretty dresses.

Check out some photos below by Kurt Paris.

PhotoShoot : What happens after a Misunderstanding - Two Stylists, Charles&Ron and a Spot of Modelling

This shoot was shot last September but for various reasons (which we're not sure of ourselves) we never got quite round to releasing the shoot....with the new spring/summer season here we finally decided it was high time to go for it.

The idea for this shoot came about quite by chance..Marisa and I decided we wanted to work as stylists on a shoot together and we thought of the C&R collection. I approached Charles Borg about using his clothes within the shoot.. and he said yes...however, somehow, he got the wrong end of the stick and what he had actually understood was that me and Marisa were to be the models. A few weeks later I spoke to him again about setting a date and mentioned model confirmation but he asked me when me and Marisa would be trying on the clothes…at that point the misunderstanding was brought out into the light amidst some befuddlement on my part..... After enjoying a good laugh he suggested that we really modelled his collection and after laughing some more, Marisa and I decided to go for it.

We thought that the clothes warranted a full out glam look so we hid our curls under wigs (styled by Michael and Guy) and got had airbrush makeup done (by Krista Paris), we then chose two outfits each from the Spring 2013 collection decided on Torri L-Ahmar as a location and let Kurt Paris work his magic.

Interview : Daniela Spiteri - Face of Malta Fashion Week 2014

Shot by world renowned fashion photographer Alan Gelati wearing Charles&Ron

This week we shine the spotlight on a local beauty and the face of Mercedez Benz Malta Fashion Week  (24th - 30th May), Maltese model Daniela Spiteri (supernovamodel.com). Daniela is absolutely beautiful, long limbed, tall and with a perfect body, she transforms the clothing she wears into something surreal. She is very photogenic and knows exactly how to use her body to its full advantage, she is also a lovely friendly person who I love chatting to whilst on shoots.

I present to you Daniela...in her own words...
So, who is Daniela?
Well Daniela is a nineteen year old girl who is always looking for new experiences. I study child care at MCAST and I aspire to be a Kindergarten teacher in the future. I'm a person that looks at life in a positive way and working with children is perfect for me as with children there is never a dull moment.

When did your interest in modelling first begin? Were you scouted or did something happen?
I was really young when I first started to get interested in modeling. I remember entering a particular modeling competition for a local magazine and I did quite well. Afterwards, my interest faded for some time until I came across a Venere application and decided to apply. My mother and friends really pushed me into applying. After a photo shoot test of the applicants I was chosen as one of the models. During Verene I met Marisa and from there on I started to work also on fashion shows and not solely on photo modeling.

What inspires you? Is there anyone or anything that you feel has influenced your modeling style?
Personally I don't look up to any personality so no one has influenced me. I enjoy being myself when modeling and working with my own style. Although I enjoy being myself, modeling does include some acting when it comes to expressions and poses and I enjoy this as this provides me with a challenge.

You were recently selected to be the face of Malta Fashion Week 2014 …how do you feel about that?
I really wasn't expecting this. At first, when I heard the news I was really stunned and obviously extremely happy. This is very high achievement for me and I feel honoured to represent the Maltese fashion scene for 2014.

Tell us about the different magazine and campaigns you have been part of
I had the opportunity to appear in various local fashion magazines such as Pink and Vida.
Left - Pink shot by Kurt Paris, Right - Vida shot by Nicky Scicluna

Another achievement which I’m quite proud of is the l’oreal business forum. This show wasn’t a mere fashion show; it involved a lot of time practising a choreography for the show. It was an amazing experience and I hope I will have similar opportunities in the future.
Would you call yourself a fashionable girl in real life? How would you describe your style?
Obviously, I try to be as fashionable as possible, however I prefer to wear clothes that suit me rather than following trends. Even though some clothes may be fashionable, they may not always be appropriate for my figure and style. Trying to be fashionable in everyday life is very hard, especially when you have to work with kids. I try to avoid dark colours as much as possible and I love to wear boots like dr martens and timberlands.

Million dollar question – what’s your secret to your enviable perfect figure?
This is a funny question to ask me, I don't really watch what I eat. I'm not too keen on healthy eating and this has been the case since I was very young. There is no secret diet, just exercise every day.

Do you have a few images you can share with us? Favourite photo ?

One of my first photoshoots ever - for Venere - still one of my favourites and another recent one both shot by shot by Bernard Polidano.

Excited for fashion week?
Yes a lot, more than previous years. This year will be a special fashion week for me. Few models had the opportunity to be the face of the Malta fashion week, lucky for me I have the opportunity to represent the Malta fashion week this year. I Hope everything will goes as planned and the 2014 Malta fashion week will be a success like past editions.

Interview Spotlight : Model Alexia Micallef Gatt

Mfw 2013 new designers show wearing ritienne zammit - shot by Bernard polidano

This week we shine the spotlight on a local beauty, Maltese model Alexia Micallef Gatt (supernovamodel.com.mt) - I've had the pleasure of working on a number of catwalk shows and photo shoots with Alexia and she is really great to work with, very diligent and efficient and very good at what she does. She is completely down to earth, very striking on the catwalk and lovely infront of the camera. I present to you Alexia...in her own words...

So, who is Alexia?
Alexia is a 21 year old University Student reading for a degree in education. I’m the type of person who likes to keep busy. I always seem to have something going on, if I’m not on the go, I’ll find a way to get involved in something new. I am really into fashion but not just clothes, I am also interested in the history of fashion, the design and construction of the garment as well as how it is marketed and presented to the client. Since I was really young, I would grab blankets or sarongs and drape them around me, this has eventually grown into sketching gowns. After helping out in making costumes for a student production on campus I am seriously considering taking tailoring classes next year. Another big passion of mine is travelling; I often browse airline websites and fantasise about a possible trip. Last Summer I visited Marrakesh and this is definitely my top travel destination to date. In my free time I like to hang out with my family or friends or watch movies.
In Marrakesh – shot by Matthew Spiteri

When did your interest in modelling first begin? Were you scouted or did something happen?
When I was about 12 or 13, I had to get new prescription glasses which were Dolce & Gabbana. My friends kept telling me I should look into modelling as I was always tall, I started looking into fashion and modelling. A few years ago, I attended a casting and got selected. There I met the wonderful Marisa Grima who asked me to join Supernovamodel.com. From then on, (also thanks to my supportive parents who would drive me to castings, fittings and events), I was given the opportunity to take part in fashion shows, shoots and promotions.

What do you feel you are best at, catwalk or photo modelling? Which do you actually enjoy most?
Both are really so much fun and I look forward to being involved in either one of them. Having said that, I LOVE the catwalk! I really get in the zone and feel confident and glamorous when I’m walking; it’s always exciting.

What inspires you? Is there anyone or anything that you feel has influenced your modeling style?
Well, not really. I like to look at the outfit and the theme of the shoot or show and let that inspire me. At the end of the day, as models, we’re trying to sell what we’re wearing so interpreting the look is what I think works best. Having said that, I’m a big fan of models Kate Moss, Miranda Kerr and recently Kendall Jenner as well as Cara Delevigne.

You were recently selected to be mart of the M&S campaign…how did that go?
The M&S campaign was great! We shot in 2 locations. First some studio shots to be used for an online completion, the second shoot was in Valletta and photos were to be used for promotion. The shots are beautiful and working with such a fun team; Kurt Paris, Krista Paris [not sure if she uses this surname when related to make up], Chris Mifsud, Marisa Grima, Stefan Balzan, you and the other models was just the cherry on top!

What has been your proudest career moment?
I’m really lucky to have been involved in so many great events yet 2 fashion shows really stood out for me. Last October I was cast for an L’Oreal Professional Business Forum held locally, although loads of models were needed, only 10 Maltese girls were selected; I was part of the Opening Show. Although it involved long hours of rehearsal, I was definitely super proud to be a part of it.

After being selected for the event “Made in MaltItaly” hosted by the Italo-Maltese Chamber of Commerce, I was so proud to have been complemented on my walk by Italian designer Nino Lettieri, who compared me to Italian personality Alessia Marcuzzi of whom he is a fan.

Describe your favourite photo/fashion show you have ever modelled for? Why is it your favourite?
My favourite shoot is definitely going to be the random and extremely fun shoot I had with my supernova besties Gaby and Bev with Kurt Paris.

Shot by Kurt Paris

With regards to shows, ahhh so difficult to pick!  I think the ones where we get to meet and work with the designer of the outfits are extra special though. Modelling for talented Gozitan designer and close friend Luke Azzopardi as well as the beautiful Mary Grace Pisani who designs the stunning Fersani garments would top my list.

PIERCED -  LUKE AZZOPARDI fashion show – by Andrew Borg wirth

Would you call yourself a fashionable girl in real life? How would you describe your style? You’re still very young, do you feel as though your style is still developing or have you found your ‘look’?
I like to think I’m quite fashionable. My style is quite smart; I often wear shirts and blazers. I always try to keep up to date with latest trends but I like to make them my own and make them work for my shape, personality and lifestyle. I’m one of those who tend to go for neutral or grey-scale colours but I am trying to move away from this…so I end up sending pics to my friends especially Gaby & Bev for their approval.

Plans for 2014?
2014 is a big year for me. I will be graduating [yeyyy finally!!] so as of September, I hope to begin teaching Biology and Science in a Secondary School, which I am really looking forward to. With regards to modelling, I am already super excited for Malta Fashion Week and Awards. Let’s hope for more shoots and shows throughout the year! I also plan on travelling, already began planning trips to Perugia for Easter, Greece in summer and maybe a quick getaway to Tuscany too.
