Malta Fashion Week : New Designers : 2015

The New Designer's Show is the longest show at Malta Fashion Week and a demonstration of what Malta's up and coming talent has to offer. There are some promising new designers that I will eagerly watch out for but unfortunately there were some others that I feel need to give their concepts a bit more thought next time round.

A few general comments

  • Quality of tailoring and finishing is important - if you're putting a collection out onto the catwalk, you need to ensure that the pieces are finished properly.
  • Quality of fabric is important - I realise that money may be tight but some of the fabrics I saw today should not be used in a fashion collection.
  • Stick to a concept - you might be bursting with hundreds of ideas but you need to be selective and choose 1 or 2 concepts to work with. Too many ideas presented at one go can leave the audience feeling disconnected and confused.
  • Don't just use any music - the music accompanying your show needs to match the mood of your collection.

First up was Margo de Vidal - Spanish designer based in Malta. Her accessories earn her a big 10 on 10, the belts are brilliant and the fanny pack has my name written all over it.

I did also quite like the tie dye long, flowing concept and the two piece crop top and trousers which had a very sharp look.

MC Fashion presented a neon collection. Viewing the collection as a whole, it did feel a bit too bright and dandy but some standalone items have an interesting vibe that I could see being worked into an outfit and paired with more basic pieces.

Fretka also presented a very bright collection. However, I felt that it didn't quite meet the expected standard. The material, tailoring and general design concept didn't feel very mature and it felt a bit lackluster and lacking in quality.

Mari Ahoy - I really liked one piece in this collection, a very interesting catsuit with cutout pieces.

The rest of the collection had way too many different things going on - with some sleek pieces, strange hats and even cartoon-like fabrics. I especially didn't like the skirt with side ties - way too much exposed flesh that really didn't work well on the catwalk and was quite unflattering.

Lukka - I would have liked to see more of a collection from Lukka, there was no real flow of a conceptual story or colour concept across the different pieces. Also, I felt some of the individual looks were over-accessorised and could have done with being a bit plainer, allowing more focus on the clothes. As individual items, there were a couple of looks I quite liked - my favourite was this metallic dress below - it is very wearable and I think a collection built around this sort of style could be quite successful for him.

Gaetano was my favourite of the night - his work was interesting, of good quality and great tailoring. It is also highly wearable and sellable. These are all important qualities to look for within a collection, I think he has a very exciting future as a designer ahead of him. There was a short dress that really caught my eye as something I would enjoy wearing but this dress below was the one that looked most  impressive from the audience.

Sarah Caruana Dingli earns a lot of points for a brilliant story concept, I loved the whole Alice in Wonderland direction she went for. Not all the pieces are wearable, some of them felt a bit theatrical but I really enjoyed watching this part of the New Designers show.

Gabrielle Fenech's pieces felt quite fresh and innovative. From what I overheard in the audience, they also appealed to a lot of people. Her prints are hand painted and she obviously spent quite a bit of of time ensuring that the little details on each of the pieces were exactly the way she wanted them to be. She's definitely one to watch out for.

Daze presented a highly sellable collection, the slogan t-shirts were fun and interesting and a lot of people will relate to and appreciate the vibe of their show.

Edith is a skilled, imaginative designer, her pieces have a certain sophisticated style about them and I love how she incorporates her costume design background into creating fashion pieces that are wearable and simultaneously dramatic.

Pochet! - this collection was very basic and didn't really bring anything new or innovative to the table. There's nothing wrong with it and I would wear a couple of pieces but I do feel that however sellable you want your collection to be,  there needs to be a bit more of an oomph at a fashion week show.

Beyond Couture - these dresses are quite lovely. I like the flowing fit, the choice of fabric and the way the colours and patterns were worked together. One point I will make is that there were a couple pieces that didn't quite fit the models right. This is a pity as it makes it harder to see the piece properly.

Maria Cutajar was another favourite, I loved the checked graphical designs and turbans but fell in absolute love with these wide hipped catsuits below. General good concepts and good designs, another one to watch out for.

Interview Spotlight : Blogger Mariel Sacco

Today we shine the spotlight on a very interesting friend of mine Mariel Sacco author and founder of fashion and lifestyle blog Confessions of a Former Size 6. When I first discovered her blog, the title alone hooked me.. I immediately wanted to know more.. I figured that anyone who would title their blog as such was probably both interesting, fiercely honest and courageous in a I'll write what I damn want kind of way.

I was right, her blog is a lovely interesting read full of both fashion tips and interesting ideas and some insight into herself and her personal life. The best thing about is her style of writing which is sometimes quirky, sometimes simply descriptive and funny but never ever boring.

Meet the person behind the blog...in her own words:

So, who is Mariel Sacco?
This is always a question I dread answering! I’m a 34 year old who feels much younger than her biological age, and is too wide for her height.  I’m interested in anything which can be termed artistic - be it visual arts, fashion, theatre, writing - anything which appeals to my visual or mental aesthetic.

When did your interest in blogging first begin? When did you first create your blog?
My first attempt at blogging came a few years back where I used to keep a rather haphazard blog with lots of random, incoherent posts.  September 2012 however saw the birth of Confessions of a former size 6, which originally was meant to be a journal of my dieting back into a UK size 6.  Along the way, my other interests caught up and now you can find posts on fashion (mainly), travel, cultural activities in Malta … and healthy food posts of course!

There’s been a lot of buzz and interest in blogging in Malta over the last year…how has this affected you?
I think it’s positive.  I mean, of course, it is somewhat competitive and getting the much wished for likes, comments and dedicated followers is more difficult.  But being somewhat obsessed on social media, I see blogging as an interesting and dynamic means of communicating oneself, especially when it is paired with other networks like Facebook, Instagram etc.

Blogging is not your full-time job is it? What is your main profession?
During the day I’m an Assistant Director on HR in the public administration … so no, blogging is far from being my full-time job!

How do you juggle everything? And you also travel a lot right?
It’s all about planning and time management.  I do quite a bit of research on the posts I write - Pinterest boards, online articles, photos I’d take and edit myself … sometimes I’d be editing or researching at 05:00am, even on a weekend morning.  I’d rather post only once in a week and have a well researched piece than post for the sake of having posted something.  With my previous job I was travelling quite often, and I spent the first eight months of last year jetting in between Malta and Krakow on a monthly basis - so the flights and waiting times did come in handy to research, plan and draft my posts!

What inspires you as a fashion blogger? Is there anyone or anything that you feel has influenced your blogging style?
I truly can’t pin-point one particular blogger who was catalyst in my blogging style.  I’m very erratic in terms of the blogs I follow, I must admit.  Having said that, if I see something - a font, writing style, feature or topic on a blog I’d be reading, it would serve me as inspiration for my own blog.  I try to keep my posts varied and interesting - I do use visuals quite a lot, but I won’t be caught dead posting a ‘photos only’ entry with just my outfit from different angles.  The written word is very important to me.

Which is your favourite post you’ve ever written?
There actually isn’t just one! I keep re-reading my two-part round up of 2013 (part 1 and part 2) as the year held so much for me that I still can’t believe I’ve actually live it all! I am also very fond of my Subway Dreams post, which actually doesn’t deal with fashion, but with another thing which is very close to my heart: Malta’s artistic potential.

How would you describe your style? Do you feel as though your style is still developing or have you found your ‘look’?
I don’t wish to be pigeon-holed in a particular style so I keep experimenting, trying different looks, especially when I go out, since obviously, work-wear is pretty standard corporate-meets-preppy in my case.  I don’t know if I want to have ‘a look’ actually … but there definitely are a number of styles I feel more comfortable wearing than others in that they represent ‘me’ more.

Plans for 2014?
I hope to dedicate more time to my blog and give it a more professional feel (any sponsors?) … and to conquer the blogging scene as the shortest, curviest, yet most stylish blogger around (joke!)

Outfit Post : Vintage in a Monastery & Library

I know I've probably bored you with Vienna related outfit posts - this is the last I promise and then I'll start posting the Paris ones :) This was a very interesting day which started with a visit to an very old monastery, included a trip on a lake in an underground mine and ended with a trip to the Library, one of the nicest libraries I've ever seen.

People who know me well know I am a reader, an obsessive reader, I devour books and let them consume me; reading a good book is probably the thing I enjoy doing most, one of the few things that really absorbs and relaxes me. When I read that the Austrian National Library is partly open to the public an is a beautiful building, I was determined to visit it but finding this building was actually more difficult that I thought it'd be since there are actually different buildings and entrances and only one is open to tourists. However, we found it finally and whilst there, I decided to snap some studious looking outfit pics.

These first two pics were taken at the monastery..

And the Library ...That day's outfit was a bit of a crazy one .... probably the fact that the sun was shining and it wasn't as freezing meant I got a bit inspired to have some fashion mix up fun.

However..I did really like the combination of the darker maroon colours teamed with leopard and bright green.... my bonnet actually belonged to my mother when she was about 16 and it's so warm and cute!

I've been using this Coccinelle bag non stop ever since I got it ..the size is perfect and it's lightweight and a cross body style so your hands and arms are still free
Hat and Top : Vintage
Shoes : Aldo
Skirt : Zara
Bag : Coccinelle
Shirt : Gap

Random Post : Car Breakdown and Paris

This morning I had a minor meltdown - maybe minor isn't the correct adjective..my steering wheel locked and the car was unable to turn in the right direction, this in itself was scary enough and was already causing the start of a meltdown but after inquiries I found out I might have to be car-less for a few weeks...and then the meltdown got worse...In hindsight I am the first to acknowledge this as being irrational...we don't have the best public transport system in Malta, but we have one; buses exist...I also have a network of family and friends who would give me lifts but it just shows how much my car means to me..how much I feel my life revolves around it, how important I perceive 'being able to journey from place to place in as little a time as possible' to be.

When I travel on the other hand I never want to rent a car..I see it as largely useless especially if I travel to cities..but most places have trains...and trains I love more than cars..they get you there even faster with no traffic and no parking hassles...can we get a metro system in Malta? Please?

As some of you might know, I recently got older and reached the big  3 0....I escaped and ran off to Paris to ensure I am somewhere where it will be impossible to feel sad - and it worked! 8 glorious days in Paris - fun, art, culture, fashion, shopping, food and Disney and I feel re-energised and very inspired. As far as fashion is concerned..I feel that Paris is truly unsurpassed both in terms of the person on the street, in terms of the up and coming local talent and of course the big names.

I traveled to Paris with my darling hubby Kurt Paris who truly made me feel like a little princess..he also had his camera handy so here are some of my fave pics which he snapped.....some outfit posts to follow along with lots of planned exhibition and designer review posts :)
