Outfit : Once Upon A Dress

If you're a regular reader, you must know I love wearing yellow - I've only mentioned it like a zillion times. I wore this lovely outfit to the LIST ROMA and Luisa Spagnoli fashion show last week - it's one of my favourite recent outfits. I love it because one it's yellow, two because it's such a beautiful dress and three, because I felt the jacket gave the dress a bit of a different look, made it look a bit different to the way others would wear it perhaps. Both the jacket and dress are from LIST ROMA so I was perfectly in theme for the occasion.

I also asked for my hair to be styled a bit differently that night too, I felt that a bit of volume would lend itself better to the outfit, the fact that it was also a very windy night helped to ensure the volume stayed put.

It really was a very cold night so the jacket didn't stay off for very long

Outfit Post : Once Upon a Weeknight

More AltaRoma posts including what I wore  to come shortly but in the meantime here's an outfit post shot on a weeknight - a day-to-night outfit.

I wore this outfit both to work, out shopping after work, and out to dinner later that evening.
If you recall, I had written this post that talked about what I recently bought, I mentioned this jacquard skater skirt and these Nero Giardini knee high boots - so here they are in the flesh.

I love skater skirts for when I plan to spend a whole day out, ok I love a-line and skater skirts every day, every time but for day-to-night outfits, I feel they can really transition, especially if you change shoes. Although the great thing about knee high boots with a chunky heel is that they work for both morning and evening, if they're comfy like these ones - no changing required!

I don't think I really need to get into the virtues of a good basic poloneck /turtleneck - honestly I've lost count as to how many I own now - quite a few in black and practically in every other colour. ...I wear each of them to death - honestly, I think a black poloneck /turtleneck is to fashion what bread and butter is to food.  If you actually don't own one here's a good option for a black basic poloneck and another one for a burgundy one.

Events Post : My Birthday :)

caroline paris birthday

Sooo last week I turned 31 and because I'm still a kid at heart I had about 4 different celebrations across the week. More posts to come about what I wore when but the first is the PARTY at Electro Lobster - which was sooo much fun.

I decided to wear a fun outfit revolving around the faux fur MONSTER HAT the hubby had just gifted me which I had been raving on about after I found it a luisaviaroma.

I'm in love with this scuba skater skirt too it's soo much fun - I bought it from London last September but I spotted a similar white one on sale at Miss Selfridge in Malta and I also found this tiered scuba skirt at asos , a less exaggerated black skirt at missguided and this brilliant scuba skater dress at asos

caroline paris birthday

Let's talk about those little shoe beauties above on my feet from Tosca Blu (Stivaletti) that got used for the first time that night and actually didn't hurt at all

Random Post : Handbag Organisers

One of the things I hate most is hunting for stuff in my large bags - whatever I'm looking for, somehow, always seems to be right at the bottom, which means it takes me ages to find it. Changing around large handbags is also a nightmare as it involves transferring all the various items from one bag to another. I could of course buy more compartmental or smaller bags or always use the same handbag but what's the fun in that.

I was happy to discover organiser bags - the first brad I cam across is Tintamar - sold at various online stores and at Porto in MaltaThey exist in various sizes and fabrics and colours and have all these handy pouches and zips so you can store items of different sizes in different parts of it. It also means that when changing bag, all that it involves is transferring the organiser from one bag to another - brillaint right? They're priced between 30 - 40 euros depending on the size and colour.

I didn't actually buy one of the Tintamar ones, I kept meaning to but I was being a bit miserly about spending 40 euros on a bag that goes inside another bag, so I decided to run an ebay search. I found the following listing selling for less than 3 euros:  Handbag Organiser.  I bought it and it's absolutely great - not of as high a quality as the Tintamar ones but it doesn't feel that cheap either. It has different compartments, some zipped, some open and fits all my stuff really well.

Changing my bag in the morning has now become a piece of cake :D. You might want to invest in one of these organisers....let me know if you do...

Shopping : What I Bought

Shoppinglist

After weeks of passing on shopping tips and sale finds, I think it's only fair that you see some of what I bought for myself over the last month.

So, above, first item in the picture shows my very first oversized jacket from Promod - an outfit post to follow very, very soon.

Right below, are a new pair of black, knee high boots - can you believe my previous, black knee high boots are about 7 years old ?! These are Nero Giardini from Stivaletti and as comfy as my bedroom slippers, ok, well, almost...

Then there's a Honey necklace that looks great with shirts / dresses etc that I've been reaching for a lot.

Below that, there's a skater skirt from Zara. I'm in love with the comfort and ease skater skirts bring to my life - I've only owned this skirt for one week and I've already worn it three times.

Then there's the PANAMA JACKS - yep I got a pair in burgundy - wohoooo

And the next two things are a cheat -- I don't own them but I'd like to very much and hey it's my birthday tomorrow. I've been passing hints at every turn for two weeks now, so hopefully some of them stuck in someone's brain !! :)

  • The first is a suede patchwork dress from ASOS - I really love the colours, it's a perfect item for Spring and in Winter I'd wear it over a cream turtleneck and some thick cream tights.. perfection.
  • It wouldn't be my list without at least something pink but even non-pink lovers, you have to admit there are few things more darling than this coat - and it's on sale.

Shopping : Down Coat & Jackets

Down Coat - Anorak

It's my birthday soon and the only good thing about a January birthday is that it's sale time and you can justify sale shopping with birthday presents to yourself..you can also pass on higher priced "suggestions" to certain people and just say look it's 'half price'. One of the items currently topping my wishlist, is a new anorak / down coat. A down coat is termed as such because it is generally filled with duck / goose feathers. I love hooded ones with fur trims, infact I do own a black one..but you know I've had it for two years or so now. I scouted the www and found a few of my current faves .

I think I'm lusting after the cream one most..but I really do like that parka with the detachable yellow fur and that denim duffle coat is to die for....what about you, which is your fave ?

Shopping : 2015 XMAS SALES

sale time
It's SALE TIME and that means more stuff for your money. Whilst I'm all for dedicating a day to rummaging around the local stores hunting away, I know it's not many people's cup of tea - so for those, online shopping might be the way to go and I've made it even easier by selecting some of my fave items.

Here are the links to the items in the first pic...I'm absolutely loving that faux fur coat and those high waisted velvet shorts ...and those BOOTS...these boots can be worn with just about anything and that coat..I mean that's a definite statement piece.

In this second selection, I've put in two anorak's because that's probably what we'll wear most over the next two months - I think I might buy the military green one myself.

I also put in two really pretty dresses, I know the festivities have passed but when it comes to dresses I always buy a couple during the sales and keep them in the wardrobe for when a last minute event crops up.

What To Wear : Christmas Lunch & MEN

Christmas Lunch is a tough one for both men and women - it's Xmas so there has to be some sort of 'dressing up', however it's also the time for eating and enjoying family and this means there has to be a good measure of comfort. For some of us, the days tend to be long and involve switching from one event to another. I've already written about what women should wear - now it's time for MEN.

I'm not differentiating between outfits for those eating in and those eating out, as I said, since a lot of people hop to more than one event, chances are that they'll need an outfit good for both situations..

  • Don't Wear a Rude/Religious Slogan T-Shirt
Christmas is a day for being at peace with others and spreading happiness, don't try to antagonise anyone.

  • Don't Wear Jogging Trousers
Chances are that your family members will be dressed smartly on this day, don't be the only one wearing joggers and trainers. Opt for a pair of smart chino-style trousers instead.

  • Don't Wear Tight Shirts

Christmas Day Lunch inevitably leads to a temporary expanding of the stomach...add that to an already tight shirt ..and we've got buttons popping all over the place.

  • Patterns might be a good idea

A lot of men I know are very talented at spilling sauce and other liquids onto their clothes...a multicoloured pattern is better at disguising such incidents than a block colour outfit.

  • Opt for a blazer
The great thing about a blazer is that it can be removed after it has served its purpose and made a great first impression.

And here's some outfit ideas I've put together - hope I've been useful...

Outfit Post : A Night Out at GAGLIARDI

Last Friday night GAGLIARDI celebrated the opening of their first uni brand store. The store is at Pjazza Tigne in Sliema and it's really quite a beautiful store. The tailoring and clothes design has always been beautiful but now they're also housed in a beautiful shop which makes you want to spend money.

For the occasion I decided to go for monochrome and red. I also gave these little babies a little outing and they behaved quite well, only hurting a little bit after quite a few hours of standing.

What To Wear : Christmas Lunch & WOMEN

Christmas Lunch is a tough one for both men and women - it's Xmas so there has to be some sort of 'dressing up', however it's also the time for eating and enjoying family and this means there has to be a good measure of comfort. For some of us, the days tend to be long and involve switching from one event to another.

I'm not differentiating between outfits for those eating in and those eating out, as I said, since a lot of people hop to more than one event, chances are that they'll need an outfit good for both situations..

  • Don't Wear any Tight Dresses

For one thing, it's really not the right occasion for such an outfit, for another, you will feel restricted especially if there are any kids in your family you might want to play with.

  • Do Dress Up

Even if you're only staying in, christmas day is a chance to get a bit dolled up and look your best, you'll be happy when you see the photos.

  • Don't Wear Cheesy Xmas Sweaters

Whilst I love Christmas Sweaters, I tend to reserve them for boxing day / secret santa girl parties at home or other casual xmas-related events.  If you really want to wear a Christmas Sweater on Xmas day - at least don't wear one that looks like it was bought in a dollar store and team it with something extra chic like a pretty, glitzy skirt or brocade trousers.

  • Don't Put Cleavage On Show

This is not the day to promote boob 'ogling'

What To Wear

Below are a couple of things I picked out, in general terms, I like the idea of a long sleeved dress with black tights and ankle boots, a smart sweater worn over nice black woollen trousers or a very nice pair of jeans (in a dark wash). I also like the idea of wearing red but I also love monochrome and patterns.

I love ankle boots with thick heels - I think they're the best thing since sliced bread, they're sleek, they look polished and they're COMFORTABLE.

What To Wear : Xmas Staff Parties - Day-to-Night - Women

It's the festive season - which means lots of parties , lots of events , and lots of clothes necessary. One of the hardest parties to dress for is the Staff Party - there are so many hurdles to overcome in terms of looking smart but classy, not revealing too much skin, not seeming boring - it gets further complicated at those staff parties that are day-to-night events.

I'll be tackling all kinds of Xmas parties but starting with day-to-night staff parties for women - a couple of dos and don'ts

Dos

Wear something smart and classically styled - black dress can easily take you from day- to night - wear it with a cardi for the morning part and then switch to a fur coat in the evening.

Go for understated jewellery - don't let it become a focus point

Go for toned down makeup - since this is a morning event minimal makeup will look better - keep a lippie on hand and update for the evening part though.

Dont's

Wear a micro mini skirt
You don't want to send out the message that you're looking to pull a colleague

Show off Too Much Cleavage
Same as previous :)

Wear Extremely High Heels
Don't be the tallest person at the party and do wear shoes you can spend a day in.

Show up in the morning wearing a body con dress. There might be activities to participate in - ensure you're at least somewhat comfortable.

Wear anything resembling kids clothes - you don't behave like a kid at the office - don't resemble one at the Christmas Party

I've put together a few dress that I think are great ideas for this event and a lovely faux fur jacket that you can smother yourself in at the end of the night.

Shopping : Sneak Peek at F&F

F&F opens tomorrow!! The store opens at Daniel's Shopping Complex and this evening I got a sneek peek at the shop and merchandise. I'm really loving the actual shop, it's really pleasant, one of those shops you will enjoy shopping in, there's lots of space, merchandise is laid out well, there's a cool industrial interior design and music playing on the speakers.

The clothes themselves are great, the prices are pretty affordable and the quality is pretty good - my fave picks are a faux fur long black coat (right below...68 euros).. a mustard top with bell sleeves...all the pjs and slippers and the fluffy sweaters. There are a couple of boxes in some of the shots as this is literally a sneak peek before it opens whilst they were still unpacking.

Interview : Sarah Zerafa - Venere

Sarah Zerafa is a girl who has always intrigued me - she's very sweet, has a great sense of style which she loves to mix up and change around and takes really great pictures. Whilst she may not have the height generally sought after for modelling, there's something about her that grabs your attention, simply put, her photos catch your eye. When she auditioned for Venere and got accepted I was very pleased and I have been following her success with a lot of interest.

With this in mind I've decided that she should be the second of the Venere girls you'all should meet - so ladies and gents I give you Sarah Zerafa.

Describe your CHARACTER in 5 words

Outgoing, fun, caring, kind hearted and friendly.

Describe your STYLE in 5 words

My style various from day to day. I always wake up wanting to dress in a particular style, but my style in 5 words would be: vintage, chic, classic, and mum-90’s-wardrobe.

How did you get into modelling?

The interest began when I was still a 10 year old, always eager to watch ‘America’s Next Top Model’s latest episode. I also remember wearing my mum’s high heels, running around the house, pretending I’m taking part in a famous fashion show. Then, at around 13 years of age I shot my first commercial and bill board and that gave my career a head start. - I later modeled for some local adverts and photographers started taking more notice of me on Facebook. Some time later, I took part in an international commercial, was part of Fashion Week 2014 and the biggest achievement of all… became a Venere girl!!

What makes you angry?

When my internet connection isn't strong enough to Skype with my boyfriend who lives in Slovakia :)

What do you hate most about modelling and what do you like most?

"What I hate most is: waking up with a big zit in the middle of my forehead on the day of an important photo shoot"

I hate waking up with a fever and having to wear a summer dress in the middle of December. Last but not least, having to pose in a pair of shoes that are 3 sizes too small and somehow still make them look good!
What I love most in modeling is being able to wear all types of different clothing including the latest fashion trends and high end pieces which I only dream of buying. I also love having my makeup done by professional makeup artists and different hair styles for every look.

FAVOURITE venere shoot?

Photo : Clint Scerri Harkins

This is my favorite Venere photo because although it wasn't an easy photo shoot, I feel that I still managed to produce a good result.

LEAST favourite venere shoot?

Photo : Steven Muliett

This is my least favorite photo - I wasn't that comfortable at the location we where in and I found it very difficult to pose on a motorbike.

What's your biggest fashion sin?

"My biggest fashion sin has to be wearing the transparent bra straps with a strapless top - come on, every one can see they are still there!!"

What do you eat for breakfast?

I am not a big breakfast fan! I usually prefer to sleep an extra 30 minutes and have a big brunch later on in the day

Any future modelling plans?

After Venere, I already have a couple of photo shoots booked and hopefully I will be involved in some more commercials.

Shopping : Let's stroke some leather at Coccinelle

I've decided to post not one but two shopping posts this week and the second one is at Coccinelle who just last week hosted a super event whereby shoppers were sent a piece of material which they then had to pair with a bag and possibly win said bag. I'm really loving their current collection, the colours are so vibrant and beautiful, the leather so soft and supple.

Then there's the smell, somehow the smell of leather of my Coccinelle bags seems more powerful than that of other leather bags.. I actually sometimes place my bag near me at my desk,  just so I can smell it whilst I work - yes I'm aware this might be considered freaky behaviour, who cares, as long as my nostrils are happy....

Click through the slideshow below for some leather feasting

Coccinelle is located in Sliema Tower Road right next to Solaris . More Coccinelle - related posts here

Family Corner : Toddlers have STYLISTS

North West - need I introduce?, Kim K’s minion - has a stylist - yes she does - a 1 year old has a stylist. She also wears black leather, slogan sweaters and pieces an adult might consider ‘too much’.

I don’t remember everything about my childhood but I have flashes and photos in my brain of what I looked like, what I got passionate about and what I cried about. According to my mother I always liked clothes, especially pretty dresses but I was stubborn and willful and insisted on quarreling about whatever it is my mother wanted to dress me in.

I do remember daily arguments, one especially - my mother insisting on wrapping me up and me insisting that I was feeling hot, strange part is that fast forward to adult state and I continually pile on layers and remain freezing.
My mother often queries this, wondering how I feel so cold now…*niggling suspicion & lingering memory*...I wasn't actually feeling hot as a child ...just *ahem* being willful…..might even have spent days feeling cold as a result but we might just keep that one to ourselves….

However, to be fair, the photos in my brain of my childhood clothes involve flowers, lots of pink and just general childhood cuteness...no photos of black leather outfits there - so this must have been why I quarreled with my mother and I was missing the stylist component - so let’s face it my arguments were justified right

I've decided that Kim got her toddler a stylist because she doesn't want to quarrel with North or maybe she is afraid North will develop a personal style that doesn't involve amplifying your assets.
North on the other hand, seems to be playing her cards just right - if she’s willful it’s not like the stylist will complain to mummy and take away her sweets & toys right ?
On that note, here are some little girl picks from the web (might be possible to find some of these locally too) - sorry North I've left the leather out of this one.

Let me know what you think - should a toddler have a stylist ?

Family Corner : A little Spot of Online Shopping

Untitled #107

In this edition of the Family Corner I've scouted the web for some pretty and cute items for kids. Disney remains a favourite  in my opinion and the last few years have really seen a surge in the popularity of the main characters, especially Mickey and Minnie. Converse are not just for adults especially pink ones and all girls need a Disney watch and pretty hair grips.

The best thing about shopping for kids is that of course it's guilt free shopping - I mean its for the kids right ? There's no way that could be in any way wrong :P.

Trends Post : Autumn Layers

autumn layering

Someone recently pointed out that it's been a while since I've collaged a few outfits together and they're right - no specific reason - just something I stopped doing.  I've been feeling more inclined lately and when ModCloth approached me and asked me to showcase their autumn layers I decided to hop back on the bandwagon.

The outfit in hand uses a blanket-style cardigan as its centerpiece. You can't have missed seeing a photo or 600 of Olivia Palermo / Cara Delevigne / Famous Woman X wearing the Burberry blanket with their initials monogrammed. If you're rich and famous you can get one of those for $1,395 - if you're a humble being you might have to look elsewhere.

This particular folk-inspired blanket-style cardigan has a brilliant pattern and colour combo. I've decided to team it with with a mustard cowl neck top and a denim shirt that I plan on wearing unbuttoned, the cowl neck top is actually a thin cardigan but I like it worn as a base layer. Since in my fuddled thoughts Autumn needs a hat and gloves, I couldn't resist adding a touch of vintage to clash with my folk.

Wear this outfit  with jeans and booties for a day out in a park / garden / walk around / a day out shopping or even to work if the dress code is casual.

If you're not familiar with ModCloth you might be worth checking them out,  they have an amazing selection of cardigans at the moment. it caters for all sizes and has lots of vintage inspired & quirky pieces - plus you can even shop by decade. They curate their clothes from different retailers as well as having their own private label. I actually found out about this site last year through Pretty Little Liars, since I obsessively hunt through blogs to see where their clothes are from - quite a few pieces were from ModCloth.

Any other layering ideas for Autumn ?

What to Wear : Winter = Red&Black + FEDORA

Red & Black is THE ultimate fiery colour combo yet it only gets one season. What with Red being the colour of Christmas and black being the dark non-colour that it is...I simply don't see that many opportunities for red & black in the summer months.

Which brings me to this ribbed, knit, asymmetrical red&black dress.... - okkkk maybe the black is slightly grey ..but who's fishing?- from Max&Co., I'm pretty certain the red&black brings out my eyes or at the very least my FEDORA but leaving that aside I've created two outfits around this dress. Yes magical number 2.

The one I'm wearing is number 1 ofc but there's another collaged outfit idea further down the road, I think the dress should be paired with a fedora but if it's not your cup of tea  you will be absolved.

I wore the dress with a pair of 'ooh la la sexy booties' that are actually one of my ALDO #perfectpair picks that you can buy at 30% off. In the collage, I've switched to a pair of taupe booties also from MAX&Co. - I liked the idea of a third colour and the booties as a style work equally well if not better.

I didn't use a bag myself - why do you need a bag in a studio? But in the collage I've put a black bag although I also loveee satchel-style bags this season,  I'm loving this one in particular . I've also added a jacket that's also from MAX&Co in the collaged outfit since I guess summer has kinda gone away now...

And for the collage...

Your turn - What do you pair RED with ?

Interview : LUKEAZZOPARDI - RICOCHET

Last year, I interviewed Luke Azzopardi right before his first solo show, at that time around Malta's fashion scene, there was a buzz of excitement with everyone wondering what exactly he was going to show. He didn't disappoint and the show was a huge success. Over the last year Luke has met several other accomplishments including producing a bridal collection In collaboration with Camilleri Paris Mode Ltd. Once again we met up with Luke right before his show to get a taste and little sneak peek of what's to come. In his own words.

A year has passed since we last met - what has changed?

Nothing much. I'm still single, still loving the occasional tequila shot. Having said that, I am juggling more projects than I can count but I absolutely love it. We might have something very big coming up our way but i can't say anything for now. Our fingers are crossed. What i can say is myself and Andrea (his brand manager) are working very very hard to make this brand big.

What is the inspiration behind your latest collection and can we get an exclusive sneak peek?

Conflict and power are celebrated in Ricochet. My Autumn/Winter 2014-2015 collection captures the female body in states of transition and evolution and vents out equal measures of light and darkness. The traditional structures of feminine garments are reworked into acute shapes and explosive silhouettes.

Describe your collection in 5 words
Conflict, Power, Transition, Evolution, Warrior.

Do you feel that the woman who wears your clothes should have a particular characteristic / feature ?
"I feel that the LUKEAZZOPARDI woman is a warrior who stands triumphant, enveloped in armour. "
I’m mainly interested in people and their stories, and my clothes add on to that to create a new narrative – one that might be semi-fictitious.

Are you excited / nervous for the upcoming show?
To be quite honest Caroline, I am quite relaxed.

"I'm confident of what I'm presenting and that the final product will complement my frame of mind."

Can you give us an exclusive sneak peek?

As a designer, what is your general, daily routine?
I sleep for at least 10 hours a day. When I'm not working on an upcoming collection, I am reading for a BA in History of Art at the University of Malta. I also have a number theatrical projects lined up periodically.

What do you personally enjoy wearing most?
My hats.

Describe yourself in 5 words
Ambitious, Determined, an Aesthete, Gozitan, Well-Travelled.

Any other exciting plans?
"I am the kind of person who likes to live life day by day. So I guess we'll have to see what new projects lie in wait, tomorrow."
