Random : It's My Birthday !!

Since my birthday falls so close to the start of the new year, I tend to measure a year from one birthday to the next, so today is when I take a look back on all that the last year has brought, with all its highs and lows.

It''s been a good year, it's a strange word to use but somehow, looking back at it, makes me feel oddly satisfied. When I was younger, I never really cared about whether or not I felt I had accomplished anything throughout the last year. In my early twenties especially, I regarded life as just one big ball of space to have as much fun as possible in. As I hit late twenties and now, today, I've turned 31 it's as though I've had this realisation that life is kind of a precious object and as morbid as it sounds, it does eventually run out. I've had this feeling of wanting to ensure that I'm living a life worth living - at least a life worth living according to Caroline :).

Some highlights from the last year included - celebrating my 30th in Paris with the hubby, a trip to Florence with my mother, blogging for Simshar & handling International Relations for Malta Fashion Week in May, going to AltaRoma in July, lots and lots of beach time in August, the New Model Today Competition and London Fashion Week in September, Ferramoda and the launch of the Chamber of Fashion Malta and the Malta Fashion Association in November, a trip to Paris with the hubby in December and a brilliant Christmas period. And of course, there were lots of other dinners, weddings and time with friends and family but those don't relate as much to this blog.

Flick through the slideshow for a trip down my memory lane (each photo is a link to that post)

It was also an exciting year for this blog in terms of lots of brand collaborations, general growth and I've also written for many different publications, both local and international. This is where I say a BIG FAT THANK YOU to all of you for following me and reading what I have to say.

As a parting note, I'd like to finish off this 'serious' reflection post with one thing - as I get older and 'wiser', I've started to live life more for myself - I care so much less now about what person X thinks of me or why person Y seems to dislike me, than I did 5 years ago. This is my life, my appearance, my work. I refuse to care about bitchiness and whilst I really do appreciate all suggestions and constructive criticism that people pass my way, I might still decide to do things differently. Here's to another good year!

My Styling Work : Working with TOMMY

It's been a hectic week what with all the Simshar red carpet frenzy, the actual premiere was tiring enough in itself...but all the scouting and selecting of the best looks and talking about it on TV and reviewing etc etc...enough to simply say I'm TIRED......but it's not yet time to rest because today is the much anticipated yearly Fashion For a Cause fashion show organised by Noelene Miggiani, Yvonne Desira Buttigieg and Marisa Grima and I'll be working backstage assisting Marisa.

Onto the point of this post and the pic above, I'd like to show you the result of a photoshoot that I worked on last week. The model is Fanny supernovamodel.com and was scouted by Marisa Grima...we decided to organise a quick shoot in collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger Malta.

Photographer : Kurt Paris
Makeup : Krista Paris
Stylists : Marisa Grima & Caroline Paris

Fanny is wearing nautical-inspired clothes very wide striped trousers that draw attention to her amazing long legs ...it was matched with an opposing horizontal pattern on top and a pop of bright colours - yellow and pink. The look is a relaxed but smart look that can easily take you from day to night and is a nice breezy outfit.

And I'd also like to give a little mention to my styling work for Simshar - styling these two great men - Ryan Gatt who has been handling all the press for the movie and premiere and Mark Mifsud one of the main actors in the movie.

Mark wears a blue striped jacket and polka dot shirt that is smart but fun and Ryan wears red trousers, checked shirt, navy blue blazer with patched sleeves and a bow-tie. -all Tommy.

Bow-ties are back with a bang and especially these material ones that are a bit more casual, they really add a huge amount of style to an outfit...so listen up men..go buy bow-ties.

Hope you like ! :)

For those who want a closer look at these these outfits, there are Tommy Hilfiger Stores in Baystreet and Valletta and they have a facebook page right here .

Simshar : My Top MALE Looks at the Red Carpet Premiere

This week has been red carpet frenzy over here with lots of time spent pouring over pictures, discussing outfits with various people and just talking about the clothes in general. The last red carpet post for the week is to list my favourite male looks from the night - again please do remember that this is just MY OPINION.

First up we have Carlton Agius (vip), Charles&Ron's assistant who looked great in his Dolce and Gabbana shirt, black suit, Prada shoes, and Charles&Ron bag
I can't recall this guy's name (simshar audience) so leave me a comment if you know him - Topman jacket, Springfield shirt, Zara trousers, new look shoes ..loved the mix of colours, patterns/beard ...cool look

Ernest Camilleri (vip) - the man responsible for all the Simshar costumes - loved his patterned shirt
Neil Falzon, the human rights lawyer and Roderick (simshar audience) ...they were my absolute favourite of the night ....patterns, textures, bow-ties, colours...everything about their outfits rocked.
Journalist Iggy Fenech (simshar audience) - Sef Farrugia bow tie, velvet blazer, gold brooch---super
Peter Carbonaro (vip) -the host for the night .. in a Hugo Boss suit and Aldo shoes and a brilliant tie pin that's apparently one of his signature looks.

Designers Charles and Ron (vip) - I loved Charles' textured suit and Ron looked great in his blazer and bow-tie.

I can't recall this guy's name (simshar audience) so leave me a comment if you know him - ZARA. NOTE * Mystery man identified - Malcolm Sciberras

The last three men are a bit tongue-in-cheek.....below is my hubby Kurt Paris, (photographer for the night)...obviously I might be a teeny bit biased but the truth is I didn't choose his outfit at all, was too busy thinking about myself..but I was really impressed with it and think he deserves a mention - Zara hat, Steel&Jelly Top, Aldo bow-tie

Now these last two (vip) I am definitely biased as I styled Ryan Gatt (responsible for Simshar press) and Mark Mifsud (one of the main male actors) in Tommy Hilfiger..but well obviously since I styled them I like them :) and thumbs up to Ryan who really didn't want to wear that bow-tie but wore it anyway :)

Simshar : My Top Female Looks at The Red Carpet Premiere

Let me start by giving my general thoughts on the style and fashion of the night.

First off, there were some really beautifully dressed individuals both men and women, both VIPS and general audience, of course some VIPS over shone the other guests but I did spot some really cool outfits from both areas.

However, speaking on a general basis, as far as female fashion went...I was very happy that most people did get dolled up and there were very few faux pas but I had hoped to see some more women, especially some VIPs who I expected to really go all out, play it a little less safe, I feel like a lot of women were happy to simply 'wear a dress' without experimenting in some way with maybe a different hairstyle, bold colours or striking accessories. Now the men, that's actually a different story...there were many stylish men, some wearing contrasting colours or clashing patterns, bow ties and other adornments - thumbs up to the men..I was very impressed.

I think Maltese women in general need to start being a little less conservative and experimenting with style a bit more, whilst there will of course never be anything wrong with a pretty dress, at the end of the day, unless the dress is some elaborate couture design that speaks a million and one style words, I think it might be a good idea to start looking at adding that something special that gives an outfit your own personal touch because otherwise you're just another girl wearing another pretty dress.

Now as regards to who I liked most please remember that this is just MY OPINION but for what it's worth here goes....

American Ambassador to Malta Gina Winstanley (vip) looked fabulous in a layered dress and crop top outfit - her crop top is by Greta Wallace of SimplyGreta (New York). Unfortunately she couldn't recall the exact name of the boutique from where she picked up her fabulous necklace.

I loved all the ilsien in-nisa girls (vip) and they all get a huge thumbs up but Moira Delia gets extra bonus points for her menswear inspired outfit that was original, extremely flattering and just oh so cool.
Karen Borg (simshar audience) looked lovely in her her vintage inspired gold dress and lace bag, loved the minimalistic accessories and red nails too!

Of course, one can never say enough words about Clare Agius (vip) and how lovely she looked. I loved the hair, the makeup, the dress by Charles and Ron ....stunning

When I first met Sef Farrugia (vip) she had this thing whereby she would produce a whole collection for a fashion show and then walk out at the finale not wearing one of her own designs (because she didn't have time) ....finally, she seems to have wised up and good thing too because in this look she is one of the best self-adverts she could possibly be...the dress is amazing as are the shoes she paired it with and of course her trademark hairstyle.

Unfortunately I am unaware as to who this beautifully dressed woman is...leave me a comment if you do.... also, these photos don't do this dress justice as the back (backless with a knot but cut beautifully) was the best part...she looked fabulous though. NOTE * Mystery woman identified - Margaret Seguna

Noelene Miggiani (simshar audience) gets a big thumbs up for pairing a black catsuit with a gold knit cardigan that I loved and conveniently kept her warm in the chilliest of nights..... and LEOPARD print shoes.

Pianist Giselle Grima (simshar audience) caught my eye for her choice of colour and the lovely shoulder design on her dress, she looked great!
Makeup Artists Tamara Burr (simshar audience) shows us how vintage should be worked- as always she looks fabulous, a perfect mixture of cool, trendy, stylish , quirky..loved it!
Actress Laura Klepo (vip) wowed from head to toe in her outfit (in a design by June Shop Paris, tailor made by Nelly (a French stylist)) that combined different textures and patterns....and with her 8 month baby bump nonetheless, a fashion inspiration too all expectant mothers-to-be.

And of course ..last but definitely not least ...the brains behind this movie Rebecca Cremona (vip)...in a Sef Farrugia custom-made gown and amazing antique gold filigree jewellery (GABA Jewellers) that I was tempted to rob her of.

Trends Post : Life Around a JUMPSUIT and how to Wear one

Life Around A JUMPSUIT

A discussion with a friend of mine as to how to wear what is termed an 'all-in-one' jumpsuit at night and avoid it looking too casual sparked this article. Basically, an an 'all-in-one' jumpsuit is a slightly casual piece of clothing so basically you need to offset that. Now in general how a jumpsuit looks depends a lot on height.....it needs some unfortunately ...so heels are necessary unless you were born with legs for miles.

As you must have guessed by now, this article is centered around the image above...the jumpsuit in the pic is a Maison Scotch jumpsuit available at Junction. It is actually the same jumpsuit Anqelique Muller (associate producer) wore to the Simshar Preimere last Sunday. Since this jumpsuit is quite muted as regards colour, I'd definitely choose something bright to pair it with but because I know some of you hate bright colours I've still put in muted options which I still think look nice. The important thing is to choose accessories that are stylish and chic..that way the look will remain smart. Finish off with some glam eye makeup or a touch of bold lip colour and you're ready to go.

Simshar : Outfit Post : What the Style Blogger (Yes Me) Wore to the Red Carpet Premiere

simshar dress
Without further ado here's the lowdown on what I decided to wear to Simshar's Red Carpet Event. A little insight into my planning - first off my role as the style blogger for the evening on the red carpet meant I wanted to somehow look cool, stylish and edgy...I didn't really take comfort into the equation which explains why I froze my ass of in the chilly wind and could no longer walk by the end of the evening after 6 hrs of standing - 10 points Caroline.

Anyway, after musing this over, I decided I wanted to wear a Maltese designer to an event that was all about celebrating and embracing local talent so I chose to wear a dress that I had fallen in love with at the Charles and Ron Fashion Show last year, at Malta Fashion Week 2013, it's a beautiful dress that is a perfect mixture of prettiness, intricate elaborate craftsmanship and style.
I then decided to offset the cuteness with a punk hair updo that I must thank Svetlana at Toni and Guy Hilton for, a new pair of Christian Louboutin shoes that although beautiful, reminded me of torture contraptions by midway through the evening, a gold Coccinelle bag to hold my camera and mobile (necessary style scouting tools), lightly patterned gold tights, a pair of padlock Michael Kors earrings and green mascara (yes I did just write green mascara - coloured mascara has become my thing... more about this in future posts).

So here are some more photos by Kurt Paris....let me know what you think of my choice :)

Simshar : The Day is Here - Let's have a little PEEK

The downside to living in Malta is that of course there isn't as much opportunity to get really dressed up as say someone who lives in a metropolitan city...and for people like me, who love experimental fashion that can be a bit of a downer..but then something comes along like the first ever fully fledged red carpet movie premiere and my excitement is set to an all time high, bouncing off the walls kind of thing.

This event is going to be a mega interesting one...there's going to be more than one host for starters - first off we've got all the girls from Ilsien in-Nisa hosting and filming the red carpet - so make sure you tune in to their program next Thursday to watch it from their perspective and for all red carpet walkers make sure you stop by and speak to them!

Then on the other side of the fence we've got Peter Carbonaro also hosting at the other end of the carpet AND we've got yours truly (yes ME I'm on the red carpet too), asking questions, style blogging and scouting the best looks and just general talking to you all and we've got Kurt Paris photographing you away - so again red carpet walkers come near us too!

Now because let's face it I've already watched the movie, I know it's brilliant and now I care about the clothes most of all, let's see what tidbits of fashion info have reached me through the grapevine:
First off, the fashion-related sponsors of tonight are 123, Sef Farrugia, Charles & Ron, Elixir, Pierre Camille, Gaba, PHSBA Malta - importers of Guinot, Mary Cohr, Guam, Tommy Hilfiger.

Now for some sneak peaks:

Clare Agius, the main actress is wearing Charles&Ron - sneak peek in photo below.

Pauline Agius from ilsien in-nisa is also wearing Charles &Ron - sneak peek in photo below.

Rebecca Cremona the director brainbox behind this movie is wearing Sef Farrugia and Angelique Muller, the associate producer is wearing an outfit from 1..2..3.

Then we've got the Tommy Boys - Mark and Sander, the main actors are going to be wearing Tommy Hilfiger as is Gianluca Bezzina and Justin Haber and Ryan Gatt (who is handling all press for this event - he is wearing a v cool outfit that I styled myself :))

Left-to-right Ryan and Mark.

And what am I wearing ? I'm not saying but I will leave you a sneak peek of my hair which was done yesterday by the genius Svetlana de Bono at Toni&Guy Hilton.

Simshar : Interviewing Ernest Camilleri

Ernest Camilleri should need no introduction to my Maltese readers, a local legend as regards costume design and I already spoke about him two days ago in an article that highlighted the differences between costume and fashion...

As promised here is Ernest Camilleri's interview ...in his own words he describes to us the process a costume designer goes through when working on a film and the downs and ups of his job.

First of all - tell us something about yourself and how you got started working in the world of film
I had been designing and making costumes since the age of 13, when I used to create costumes for the Gozo Carnival.  A few years later I went to MTADA (Manoel Theatre Academy of Dramatic Arts) where I studied drama and costume. When the course was over I was asked to design costumes for the Pantomime and following that it was a rollercoaster ride of designing/making costumes for several theatre and dance productions.

In the world of film it all started when PCP Company asked me to style a commercial for Corona Beer which included a number of pirate and British army uniforms from the period of the late 18'00s.  From then on I ended up working regularly in films and commercials.
Over the past few years I also started working on international events such as the London Olympic Flag Handover and most recently the Winter Olympics.

Were you familiar with the story of Simshar when you were asked to come on board..was it a story that had particular meaning or interest in any way for you ?
3 years ago Rebecca contacted me and told me that she had plans to create a film about the Simshar story.  I was familiar with the actual happening of Simshar as it was all over the news, so I was very excited when I was presented with this opportunity to design costumes for a film based on actual facts; I had to re-create characters of actual people, giving them a look to suit the purposes of the film. This is not that easy.

How did you go about planning the various outfits?
After having read the script and discussed it with Rebecca, I started researching the characters and what relation they have to the story.  Rebecca wished to make the film colour graded, meaning certain colours would convey the mood, so we took it a step further were I dressed certain actors in certain colours.  At first look most of these things would go unnoticed but then the eye will start to associate certain colours with certain actors and certain moods.

And how do you go about creating them?
This is the actual fun part, the point at which the design actually becomes alive.  There is fabric sourcing, buying second hand clothes and shoes, hiring of uniforms and making of uniforms.  We also went about dyeing and ageing almost all the costumes to give them a worn look and even making band new costumes and ageing them to make them look real.  The list is never ending.

What was your biggest hurdle throughout production of the movie?
I would say that we had to do an awful lot to do with little time and money.

The première and release date is almost here...are you excited to see what everyone is going to think?
I am sure that all people involved are excited about the première as this movie will raise the bar of the local film industry.

What is your answer to anyone who is still unsure about going to watch the movie?
Go and watch the movie, you will definitely enjoy it as it has a human side to it and not just a story.

And what will you be wearing to the première...any sneak peek available?
I usually go for more of a casual look, but nothing is set in stone :)

Remember that Simshar premières on the Sunday 27th April -this Sunday !

Simshar Spotlight : Costume vs Fashion

You must be sick of hearing me talk about the Simshar première by now but 'I'm so excited..I just can't hide 'it........remember Sunday 27th ...wohooooo...get dressed up..... I'm scouting :)

I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing costume designer extraordinaire Ernest Camilleri and we got to discussing the huge differences between working on a film and working in fashion and whilst his interview will follow suit very very soon..in the meantime I thought it would be fun to list these differences:

Intention
Fashion : Worn by a model or a person as fashion statement
Costume : Worn by an actor/actress to convey a character and idea of a person.

Appearance

Fashion : The focus is on making the person in question look awesome.
Costume : The focus is on making sure the person's looks fit the character. This might mean making the person look ugly and making the person wear something that really doesn't flatter them..so yes it might even mean making the person look fatter than they are...

Planning

Fashion : The focus is most often on incorporating current trends and styles in interesting ways.
Costume : The focus is on researching the period, living situation, economic climate of the character in question and ensuring the costume meets all criteria.

Colour

Fashion : The focus is on the person' skin tone/ current trends / shoot theme
Costume : The focus is on the scene's mood ..colour can help to convey certain moods, infact Ernest apparently made use of this technique throughout Simshar.

Check back for Ernest's interview coming very very soon !!!

Simshar : Simshar lands on the Big Screen for the very FIRST time

I don't want to sound in any way full of myself cause generally sometimes i feel quite the opposite BUT this month I am considering myself to be a very lucky girl indeed, not only do I get to be the style blogger of the Simshar premiere and learn about the film industry and have oodles of fun BUT I got to watch the movie early yesterday with the rest of the crew. Guys seriously ....my opinion has zero to do with my affiliation to the premiere ... this movie ROCKS....the crappy part is I got so engrossed in the story and the various plots being unfolded that I umm kind of missed a lot of details, such as diff outfits, props etc....I only realised this when I visited the exhibition after and not much was familiar.

The exhibition curated by Martina Guillaumier (set designer for the movie) is set up at the Embassy Complex Valletta and if you're in the neighbourhood and in any way interested in how film sets are put together, I suggest you pop by. It is curated really well with lots of details...set titbits of information and a nice little mix of humour thrown in. It might be a good idea to watch it before watching the movie as then you'll actually watch out for these details in the movie and not miss them like me.

Here are some photos of the exhibition...although I snapped a lot more I'm only giving you a sneak peak..I want you to see the actual exhibition as it's a totally different feel - seeing a photo and seeing the actual thing.
