Outfit Post : Twisted Bride and Different Shoes

Yesterday's outfit was my version of a  twist on a bridal outfit - all the elements are there - something shiny, sequins, white and cream and something covering my hair :D. I couldn't decide between wearing my new heeled Birkenstocks or this New Silver Rubber Heels I found in Primark last September and never got round to wearing. I decided to simply wear both, and switch to and fro between them. I also grunged my hair using that sea salt spray I h

The great thing about this outfit is that it's insanely comfortable and since yesterday was a very long day including two Malta Fashion Week shows and Mother's Day Lunch, some sort of comfort was a must.

Outfit Post : It's a Monochrome Affair

Something new, something comfortable ..such was the order of the day when choosing an outfit to wear to yesterday's event and work backstage. I didn't actually spend a whole day in this outfit though, this was just for nighttime work..I wore something else before that will get its own limelight in weeks to come. This Spring / Summer I'm really in the mood for white, white white, lots of monochrome and plenty of graphical patterns.

I decided to have my hair braided for the first few days of fashion week - this was actually their second day, their first night was the launch party last night.

Events : River Island & Timberland Showcase

Last Saturday at Cafe del Mar along with the Saturday afternoon chill-out party atmosphere, they introduced a new concept called Fashion del Mar whereby some brands showcased some highlights from their Spring/Summer collection.

Here's a snippet of what River Island displayed and some of the key trends:

  • WHITE - think head-to-toe bright sparkling white - there's nothing more gorgeous than white in summer and this year it's a really really big trend, as a side trend white lace is big again.
  • MONOCHROME - white and black is carrying over from the Winter season and it looks just as fab in summer
  • CROP TOPS - yep these are still around this year
  • DENIM - is denim ever not in ?
  • FANNY PACKS - arghh not sure whether to love or hate this one but you have to admit there is at the very least the comfort appeal.

Timberland displayed and some lovely male fashion, it feels as though their designs have a bit more structure and tailoring to them than they used to. The shirts in particular have a lovely fit.

That's it folks - in case you're you know shop-oblivious Timberland is in Sliema, Bisazza Street and River Island is at The Point - Happy Shopping

NEWS : MFCC WAREHOUSE SALE '15

It's time to talk about the yearly warehouse event happening at MFCC. It started last Thursday and ends tomorrow but stock gets replenished daily. There's a bunch of bargains to be had and some good stores are participating. There are different stands, ranging from homeware to food to of course clothes. Since this is a fashion blog :P - here's some info on the clothes.

The shops that interested me most were mainly -  River Island, New Look, Timberland (for the boys), Kiabi, Benetton and Sisley, Miss Sixty / Desigual / Killah, Teatro Boutique and Rinascimento - all shops I actually like to shop from at full price. Finding the good stuff does involve some hunting, so if that kind of shopping gives you the jeepers, this might not be the best place for you. If on the other hand, the thought of a good scavenger hunt realising in an awesome prize, makes your heart rate rise a notch..then I suggest you hightail it there today...you might find me there on round 2...

And for some product shots ..click through this awesome - work-of-art installation slideshow below

Opens today from 10 a.m - 10 p.m and tomorrow from 10 a.m - 9 p.m

DENIM JEANS GUIDE & RIVER ISLAND - PART 2

A few weeks ago I published a guide to the different styles of jeans found at RIVER ISLAND using myself as a model. Me being the self-critical person that I am found this quite a hard experience and I offered one reader to chance to share my burden, as long as she owned a body shape different to my own pear. Interestingly enough, all the emails I received, and there quite a few, were all from skinny, skinny girls with no hips or bum. Whilst very skinny is a different shape to mine,  I preferred using someone who has a bit more of a shape.

Michela Mallia, who is actually a model, is straight shaped and very thin but she has one thing that's a bit different - she owns a somewhat muscular, very toned body and a lovely, round bum. So here's part 2 to the RIVER ISLAND DENIM guide with Michela Mallia as your guide.

Just like in the first guide - the first order of business is the FLARED pair. I liked myself in them and I like them on Michela. I think both the shape and dark wash is super flattering for all body shapes. Michela's comment was that she could get used to them,  she thinks they made her look tall and thin but she's simply not used to this style of trousers.

Now, let's focus on the skinny jeans styles. Michela's long slim legs make her a perfect candidate for skinny jeans, she carries them very, very well.

First up, we've got the skinnier than skinny TUBE PANTS. Great figure or not, in my opinion these are still too tight, still too much like under clothes rather than stand-alone trousers.

Michela felt the same way and described them as making her feel naked, they didn't get her vote. Next up is MOLLY JEGGINGS - similar to the previous tube pants in style and fit but with a big improvement - a less revealing nature. Michela loved these and described them as comfortable and easy to both style and wear.

EVA CIGARETE - If you recall, as I mentioned in my first guide, cigarette pants differ from skinny jeans - mainly in terms of the leg opening - it's wider and therefore adds a bit of height illusion. The fit is also slightly looser than skinny jeans.

The patches on this pair are still original, I find them really striking. Michela loved the fit and enjoyed wearing them very much. She also commented on the fact that she liked the way they made her bum look.
A new skinny style - CARA SUPER SKINNY. I have to start by mentioning the triangle detail at the side which helps to slim down the side of the leg. I was quite excited when I saw it. They also have a really nice bum lift and I love the knee cap torn detail. They do hug the thighs a bit too much for my liking but this would probably loosen after just the first wear. Michela gave these a thumbs up and declared them an all-round pleaser.

AMELIA super skinny is another new style of skinny jeans and possibly one of the most flattering ones. The pockets are positioned at a great angle and the bum is very well supported. I liked the fact that the legs and thighs aren't pinched and Michela commented on them being very comfortable. I'm also a fan of this particular wash.

The next one up is a brand new style ULTIMATE BOYFRIEND - Michela has the perfect figure for this style of jeans and they look simply great on her. She declared them to be super comfortable and fun to wear and I think she was kinda contemplating not removing them and forfeiting the rest of the guide at one point.

A standalone pair - MOM VINTAGE SLIM - my personal fave and the one I chose to give a home to. I still love the fact that they've got a few torn patches in the front, the turn up at the hem, the crotch is a bit loose, it's high waisted and the little v at the back. These get points for fit, comfort and originality.

However, moment of truth - I wasn't so sure I liked them as much on Michela. I honestly think that these jeans might look a bit better on someone with a bit more curves, I felt that they should tug a little more around the hips and not just hang there. As it were, I felt they weren't really that flattering and didn't really do much for her body.

EVA GIRLFRIEND - I had quite liked these ones when I wore them - I had found them to have a general good fit in all areas with just the right amount of looseness versus form-flattering.

Michela's pair are in a different, lighter wash and this particular pair, in this wash, are not really that flattering on her. The whiskers positioned themselves exactly along the widest part of her hip, making them appear wider than they actually are. Without these whiskers though, or had the whiskers found themselves elsewhere (this might happen on a shorter person) they would have fit perfectly and her bum actually looks fantastic in them. Michela herself finds the straighter, not-so-skinny fit a bit strange but that's just a matter of getting accustomed to seeing something different to skinny, skinny jeans

JENNA STRAIGHT - In my guide I mentioned that I thought these needed a girl with small hips but could work with a round bum and in fact they fit Michela perfectly. They flatter her, they enhance her curves perfectly, they don't hug the wrong places - love them!

DAISY SLIM - Whilst these aren't ill-fitting so to speak they aren't the best of the lot. I had mentioned that they did something weird to my bum but in Michela's case it's more the legs I'm not a huge fan of and neither was she.

Hope you've enjoyed both these jeans guides (if you missed my original guide check it out) - & let me know if there's any other guide to any other fashion item you wish !!!

Denim JEANS Guide & River Island

Let me start by stating that this is probably the hardest, most tantrum-inducing blog post I've ever written. When River Island approached me and asked me to compile a denim jeans guide - my reaction was  'yesss, that's really interesting'. Well, it is, I don't dispute that, what I didn't think about is the fact that if you're compiling a true, honest guide, well then, that means showing off the jeans from ALL angles. Yes ALL angles - that includes the bum and of course, this is for ALL jeans types including the ones that don't suit me.

Now this isn't a cry for flattery but the truth is, I don't like my legs or my bum - I wish my legs were longer, my hips slimmer and my bum less round. I'm generally all about ways to give the area less attention not more. So, when I started seeing the photos of my bum in all it's glory - that the hubby was patiently shooting - well lets just say it wasn't pretty. But as they say life goes on and I guess if I had a body that looked brilliant in every pair of trousers, it might not be much of a guide...so without any further ado - I give you the not-so-skinny, guide to jeans at River Island.

  • When buying jeans, the type of fit they provide is very, very important - basically, not all fits suit all bodies, some are meant for curves, others aren't. It is quite important to know your body type, if you're not sure of it, read this post. My body shape is a classic pear (meaning more weight in my lower half), so all you pears reading this post, this is probably something along the lines of what you'd look like. All the other shapes.. I'll try to give a bit of context to feed the imagination.

First up is the style most flattering to pears - KICK ASS FLARE. Flared jeans are actually this new season's hottest jeans trend. This is a particularly nice pair and I really like the dark, smooth wash. The amount of flare is just right, it balances out the hips and bum if you have any and at the same time, it's not a huge flare that makes the jeans too much of a statement piece. These are also very comfortable, they look best on heels - a definitive favourite.

Next Up is the skinny jeans section - those jeans that are mostly unflattering for pears but perfect for those girls that tend to carry more weight on their upper half and skinny girls. These first ones below are the ALICE SUPER SKINNY. I wasn't a big fan of these, the wash isn't my favourite but I believe it comes in other options, I don't really like the lighter tinge in the front of the thighs. Besides that I didn't really like the way they set on the thighs but I really believe these would probably look great on someone with small thighs though, even a bit of extra height would make a big difference.

Next up is the skinniest of all - TUBE PANTS, these are similar to jeggings. This particular pair are high waisted though which is quite a nice touch. I thoguht I would hate these, but they actually look quite good from the front. However, if you do look at the back..these are a big no no for any girls with rounder, fuller bums. Having said that, for girls with small bums and no hips these will look amazing. I believe these would also work really well on those girls that actually want to  give the illusion of a rounder bum.

One thing to point out, is that since these are high waisted, they are not good for apple shapes - these need a flat stomach. BTW - warning - these are insanely comfortable - you might end up living in them if you purchase them.

Next up is MOLLY JEGGINGS - similar to the above tube pants in style and fit. In terms of which body shapes they would suit, it's pretty similar to the previous except , these are not high waisted, so they can easily be worn by girls whose stomach isn't flat. The knee cutouts is something that's really in trend at the moment so that's a plus and this wash always looks really nice in Spring and Summer.

Next up is EVA cigarette pants - cigarette pants are a bit different to plain 'old skinny jeans - mainly in terms of the leg opening - if you notice, they've got a wider leg opening so they can fall down past the ankle. This extra length can add a bit of height illusion. The fit is also slightly looser than skinny, skinny jeans. These are great for apple shapes but on pear shapes I find the fit to be a bit restrictive and tight around the hips and in general not that flattering.

And we've got another super skinny - LANA SUPER SKINNY... I actually really like these. I'd need to wear them with a loose top to make the discrepancy between my waist and hips appear smaller, but they've got a lovely fit and I love the patches. The tight fit makes them feel less comfortable and a bit restrictive but not as much as the previous ones. Of course the restrictive feeling would differ on a different shape. In general, I think these can be worn by women with different shapes but if you're a pear like me, remember to add bulk to your upper half.

Next up is a standalone boyfriend jeans ASHLEY BOYFRIEND SLIM - love, love love these , the fit is relaxed but not too relaxed, the wash is a really nice shade and there's also just the right amount of torn patches. I can also vouch for them being as comfortable as my pjs  - ten points all round. These should suit most body shapes, just don't pair them with something too slouchy on top, unless you;re very tall as this might overwhelm you.

Another standalone these are - MOM VINTAGE SLIM - another big love. They've got a few torn patches in the front (which I missed - sorry !!) but you can take my word, adds a great style touch. O Other plus points - the turn up at the hem (which can be removed if desired) is also a lovely feature, the crotch is a bit loose - meaning really, really comfy, it's high waisted and love that little v at the back. These get points for fit, comfort and originality.

Next Section is the Straight leg section. These are the style of jeans that people wore before skinny jeans existed when they didn't wear flares or boot cuts. I remember owning straight leg jeans as a child but by the time I was truly caring about and buying my own jeans they were gone.

This first style is the DAISY SLIM - love the torn patches, love the turn up, but wasn't happy with the fit. Technically speaking, as a style, these are meant to suit my body shape more than skinny jeans but I much prefer the way the LANA SUPER SKINNY fit, these do something weird to the bum - not a fan. I think the problem is the combination of hips and bum but mainly I think these should look best on small / less round bums.

EVA GIRLFRIEND is up next and I liked this style. I love the patched denim feature most of all but I also liked the fit from all areas. Plus they're comfortable! These also get points for looking great with both flats and heels - they get my vote.

Last order of the day is JENNA straight and although I like the dark, flattering wash, I'm not a huge fan of the way they fit, they don't really shape the bum, it seems as though they just kind of fit on top of it. These will be best on girls with small hips. A small bum is not a necessity, a round ,toned bum will also look good but I don't think hips should be present for this one.

So after trying on all these jeans and huffing and puffing for a while as to how fat I look, I decided I really wanted new jeans and I should keep a pair for me - which do you think I chose ?

Anddddddd now I've got something for you guys - because I'm pear shaped, this guide was a bit pear-centric which might be a bit unfair.  I'd like to compile the same guide with a different (read opposite) body shape to mine.

I'm looking for a female reader with an apple or straight body shape that is ready to compile this same guide and get her photos taken in the exact same way by Kurt Paris.  For your time and energy, you'll get my gratitude and the chance to keep whichever pair of jeans you want.
Soooo send me an email on caroline@carolinefashionstyling.com if you're interested !!

For more juiciness - this Saturday only in Sliema and the Point promoters will be giving out River Island denim cards with a 20% off promo code - BUT they need to be used there and then e.g. the card given will be going to expire in say 2 hrs time -- so watch out for these guys and go bag yourself one of these pairs of jeans - there are 11 to choose from !!!
