DENIM JEANS GUIDE & RIVER ISLAND - PART 2

A few weeks ago I published a guide to the different styles of jeans found at RIVER ISLAND using myself as a model. Me being the self-critical person that I am found this quite a hard experience and I offered one reader to chance to share my burden, as long as she owned a body shape different to my own pear. Interestingly enough, all the emails I received, and there quite a few, were all from skinny, skinny girls with no hips or bum. Whilst very skinny is a different shape to mine,  I preferred using someone who has a bit more of a shape.

Michela Mallia, who is actually a model, is straight shaped and very thin but she has one thing that's a bit different - she owns a somewhat muscular, very toned body and a lovely, round bum. So here's part 2 to the RIVER ISLAND DENIM guide with Michela Mallia as your guide.

Just like in the first guide - the first order of business is the FLARED pair. I liked myself in them and I like them on Michela. I think both the shape and dark wash is super flattering for all body shapes. Michela's comment was that she could get used to them,  she thinks they made her look tall and thin but she's simply not used to this style of trousers.

Now, let's focus on the skinny jeans styles. Michela's long slim legs make her a perfect candidate for skinny jeans, she carries them very, very well.

First up, we've got the skinnier than skinny TUBE PANTS. Great figure or not, in my opinion these are still too tight, still too much like under clothes rather than stand-alone trousers.

Michela felt the same way and described them as making her feel naked, they didn't get her vote. Next up is MOLLY JEGGINGS - similar to the previous tube pants in style and fit but with a big improvement - a less revealing nature. Michela loved these and described them as comfortable and easy to both style and wear.

EVA CIGARETE - If you recall, as I mentioned in my first guide, cigarette pants differ from skinny jeans - mainly in terms of the leg opening - it's wider and therefore adds a bit of height illusion. The fit is also slightly looser than skinny jeans.

The patches on this pair are still original, I find them really striking. Michela loved the fit and enjoyed wearing them very much. She also commented on the fact that she liked the way they made her bum look.
A new skinny style - CARA SUPER SKINNY. I have to start by mentioning the triangle detail at the side which helps to slim down the side of the leg. I was quite excited when I saw it. They also have a really nice bum lift and I love the knee cap torn detail. They do hug the thighs a bit too much for my liking but this would probably loosen after just the first wear. Michela gave these a thumbs up and declared them an all-round pleaser.

AMELIA super skinny is another new style of skinny jeans and possibly one of the most flattering ones. The pockets are positioned at a great angle and the bum is very well supported. I liked the fact that the legs and thighs aren't pinched and Michela commented on them being very comfortable. I'm also a fan of this particular wash.

The next one up is a brand new style ULTIMATE BOYFRIEND - Michela has the perfect figure for this style of jeans and they look simply great on her. She declared them to be super comfortable and fun to wear and I think she was kinda contemplating not removing them and forfeiting the rest of the guide at one point.

A standalone pair - MOM VINTAGE SLIM - my personal fave and the one I chose to give a home to. I still love the fact that they've got a few torn patches in the front, the turn up at the hem, the crotch is a bit loose, it's high waisted and the little v at the back. These get points for fit, comfort and originality.

However, moment of truth - I wasn't so sure I liked them as much on Michela. I honestly think that these jeans might look a bit better on someone with a bit more curves, I felt that they should tug a little more around the hips and not just hang there. As it were, I felt they weren't really that flattering and didn't really do much for her body.

EVA GIRLFRIEND - I had quite liked these ones when I wore them - I had found them to have a general good fit in all areas with just the right amount of looseness versus form-flattering.

Michela's pair are in a different, lighter wash and this particular pair, in this wash, are not really that flattering on her. The whiskers positioned themselves exactly along the widest part of her hip, making them appear wider than they actually are. Without these whiskers though, or had the whiskers found themselves elsewhere (this might happen on a shorter person) they would have fit perfectly and her bum actually looks fantastic in them. Michela herself finds the straighter, not-so-skinny fit a bit strange but that's just a matter of getting accustomed to seeing something different to skinny, skinny jeans

JENNA STRAIGHT - In my guide I mentioned that I thought these needed a girl with small hips but could work with a round bum and in fact they fit Michela perfectly. They flatter her, they enhance her curves perfectly, they don't hug the wrong places - love them!

DAISY SLIM - Whilst these aren't ill-fitting so to speak they aren't the best of the lot. I had mentioned that they did something weird to my bum but in Michela's case it's more the legs I'm not a huge fan of and neither was she.

Hope you've enjoyed both these jeans guides (if you missed my original guide check it out) - & let me know if there's any other guide to any other fashion item you wish !!!

Styling Work : VENERE AT THE PIT

Last night's edition of lifestyle and fashion, Maltese TV programme Venere featured my styling work.
The theme was inspired by the location - The Pit. The Pit is a fitness centre that focuses on HIT training using weights, kettle bells and other established training methods. The genius of the place is that for starters the actual place reminds one of a school gymnasium and makes you want to run & jump around and play games. The second great thing is the workouts they create, they're always innovative, and always taxing - it's just one hell of a good workout.
I was attending their classes in Summer (sadly my Winter working hours made it a bit impossible to continue) when I was thinking what fun it would be to organise a shoot in this place. It evolved from there, we thoguht that sticknig to a black, slightly grungry, slightly dark styling mood would work best with the look of the place.

Models wore mainly clothes by local designer Rosemarie Abela - Jade Bartolo who was dressed in a long, silk, tunic-style dress worn over a leather tank top - I chose this style so as to make best use of her height and slender frame, I also added leather gloves and leather bracelets.

Michela Mallia wore a short sleeved jacket-style tunic over another slashed tunic over, her outfit was paired with high top sneakers. Michela has a sporty image so I felt that this look suited her, especially in the context of the theme of the shoot.

Rachel Abela wore a leather skirt, a blazer and a waistcoat knit over everything. I chose Rachel's outfit to enhance her petite frame - the skirt shows off her thin legs and the waistcoat nips in at the waist thereby enhancing it.

Interview : Michela Mallia - Venere

In a new interview series, we will be meeting the Venere girls to get to know them a bit better.

First up is Michela Mallia. I first met Michela (nurse by day, model by night) when she participated in the Toni and Guy Malta "Be The Look" Competition for which I was the stylist. I was immediately taken with her androgynous style, her bubbly personality and her confidence. I loved the result of that shoot. Michela progressed with her venture into modelling and now I've had the opportunity to work with her again for the lifestyle local program Venere.
Here is Michela, in her own words

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MODELLING?

I was sitting in a makeup artist's chair for a one on one learning session in 2012, when she suggested that I submit a photo to Toni and Guy Malta "Be The Look" Competition. Considering that I know the brand well, I never thought that I would be chosen to compete, but I was shortlisted and eventually chosen as the female model for January.

I was also chosen to compete in Miss World Malta - I placed sixth with my hooded yellow lace Tarik Ediz dress - my own choice. Although it was a fantastic experience, I met and made friends with some amazing young women and gained a lot of recognition, I realised that my niche is high fashion, both in front of the camera and on the runway. This is the reason I applied to Venere; to gain experience and learn from the best people within the local fashion industry.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY IN 5 WORDS
Kind, caring, bubbly, funny, short tempered.

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE IN 5 WORDS
Black, androgynous, chic, fashion-forward, mine.

WHAT MAKES YOU ANGRY?
I hate it when people are not honest with others, choosing to use trust to stab people in the back and get ahead. I am completely against bullying, especially racism. These strong feelings started because I was bullied as a child, and have gotten worse since I started working full time at the ITU and have cared for patients of all forms and colours. Finally, what I think makes me the most angry is child neglect and abuse - children are a gift from God, and it breaks my heart to see kids suffering because they have incapable guardians for whichever reason it may be.

WHAT DO YOU HATE MOST ABOUT MODELLING AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST? Modelling is a form of self expression that if done correctly - especially in conjunction with fashion, can be translated into art. It is the most freeing experience to be able to pose in front of a camera and produce a phenomenal shot while wearing a huge wig covering half of your face. Apart from that, its fun to be made up from head to toe once in a while. However, it is difficult to be treated differently because of your professional portfolio, and
"....you must prepare yourself mentally for the pornographic innuendos due to more revealing photos or outfits on the runway - no matter how tasteful they may be."
You have to learn to trust only the right people because of this consequence. Unfortunately, wanting to look your best can sometimes be taken too far. It is saddening to see so many models that have made themselves ill in an effort to look thin like their colleagues.

FAVOURITE VENERE PHOTO

This is my favourite photo because it's a completely different concept. The makeup was totally different to what I am used to having on my face and the wig made posing difficult as half my face was covered but I managed to produce what I think is a phenomenal photo; I can proudly call it mine. In my opinion, the emotion in my face when compared to the mask is really striking. I really wish it could have fared better in the actual Facebook competition.

LEAST FAVOURITE VENERE PHOTO

This photo is my least favourite because it was my first shoot, and it was nerve wracking to pose in Bizazza Street full of people. Although the child that was paired with me was not cooperating, I think that I could have done a better job.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST FASHION SIN?
You can say that my younger adolescent days were my fashion sin decade. I was a tomboy and I used to wear the most unflattering items for my figure.
"Nowadays, I feel comfortable wearing most of the things that I choose to wear........."
My fashion sin would probably be going overdressed to an event.

WHAT DO YOU EAT FOR BREAKFAST?
Usually I have oatmeal with protein, or else a fruit smoothie chock full of protein, or else protein pancakes. Quite boring actually.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FUTURE MODELLING PLANS?
I would like to be recognised as a reliable, professional fashion model, and I would like to work with a number of prominent brands in future, namely Charles and Ron, Creative Factory Seven and Ritienne Zammit, both in front of the camera and on the runway. I'm hoping that the Venere team will help me learn more about modelling and the industry to be worth of such opportunities. Eventually I would love to work abroad. I know how difficult it is to break into the industry, but a girl can definitely dream!
