Malta Fashion Week : Day 4 : 2015

It was a full house tonight at the beautiful Chamber of Commerce in Valletta, Malta - incredible turnout and great atmosphere. Three widely different designers showcased tonight - Julia Boikova, Marco Parascandalo and Sai Suman. The highlight of the evening was without a doubt Marco Parascandalo, a designer who has taken local street wear designs to a new level and gained quite a bit of popularity over the last year.

His new collection builds on his previous concepts of street wear using slogans and becomes a bit more intelligent with a range of interesting pieces using different fabrics and employing different cuts and shapes. The silk cotton shirts are beautiful as are the fur/hair ? bombers and tops but the patchwork denim pieces stole my heart.Whilst the collection is both highly wearable and sellable I was pleased to also see some more creative and daring pieces especially in terms of how certain pieces were presented on the catwalk - skandlu boxers anyone ?. It was a pleasure to watch Marco's show today.

Julia Boikova based her collection on a very interesting pattern that was inspired by a single photo of a rope that she brought from India. The show had a very sporty vibe and I really liked the presentation and styling of the show including the music that accompanied it. The collection was pleasant enough and I like the fact that she used her trademark pattern throughout but presenting it in different manners and combinations. I would have preferred and been interested to see a couple more creative pieces in the lineup, it did feel a bit too safe as a whole collection. I must also mention the ALDO sandals paired with some of the pieces - they're absolutely brilliant.

Sai Suman is a designer from India who showcased in Malta for the first time, she has been steadily gaining quite a large international following especially in Dubai and India. She presented a range of different couture and evening gowns forming a 'jungle' concept collection.

The pieces mainly incorporated Indian Bollywood type silhouettes and detailing, some of the gowns has some lovely intricate detailing. She also presented a few menswear pieces.

Outfit Post : Slogans and Shoes

Spring and sunny weather is finally here and I got to go out without a jacket !!! I've meaning to shoot a few photos wearing this fab 'Ommi Ma' sweater by Marco Parascandalo - ain't it fab ? Ommi Ma is a Maltese expression that translates literally to 'oh my mother' but in reality is more along the lines of 'oh my god'. This fab Maltese designer's winter collection took popular Maltese expressions like these and emblazoned them along sweater and t-shirts.

And if you look down at the photo below you can see my latest yellow babies (US Polo Assn from Stivaletti). I love the 70s-inspired wooden heels & platform and blue beading.

Outfit Details:

Sweater - Marco Parascandalo
Overalls : Jennyfer
Shoes : US Polo Assn from Stivaletti

Styling Work : The Elf - Ilsien in-Nisa Weekly

As some of you may know, I've been writing for the Ilisen in-Nisa Weekly for the last three months. I've also styled two fashion editorials - the first one was all about Maltese designers and this second one is all about Playful Fashion - A Dark and Brooding Elf. Both these shoots were printed in a special December issue that's still on sale in Malta at Agenda and 8TillLate (proceeds go to charity).

For those who haven't yet bought the magazine, here's the result of the photoshoot - shot by Kurt Paris. The model is the stunning Michela Buhajar (supernova.com), Makeup by Mateja Camilleri and Hair by Alexander Carabott. We shot this shoot in Viscount Toy Store Valletta.

The concept is a dark and brooding one, with an element of surrealism, a dark elf surrounded by children's toys just before Christmas. Kurt had the brilliant idea of shooting this editorial in monochrome which fitted the theme perfectly.

I styled the looks using mainly dark colours with an element of monochrome. I played around with different textures, sequins, leather finished, shiny fabric and fur. All these products are available locally and I also used pieces from two of our local designers Marco Parascandalo and Rosemarie Abela

Events Post : PARASCANDALO Marco - Seriously Black

I had fun tonight, Marco's show and collection is edgy, fun, intelligent, witty and just plain cool. Black was the omnipresent colour as the title of the collection Seriously Black would imply. In an interview I conducted earlier this week, Marco described being inspired by his surroundings which are currently the local city of Birgu and it's quaint old but thriving vibe, his time spent in east london can also comes across in the overall look of his collection. There are many interesting pieces in this collection but his slogan sweaters are the standout items for me, but a mention must be given to the shirts, torn trousers and well actually everything.

For some 'people' photos check out my facebook page.

I really liked the collection and will definitely be adding one of these sweaters to my wardrobe - a big thumbs up to Marco.

Interview Post : PARASCANDALO Marco

On the 24th October Marco is presenting - Seriously Black - his new collection. Marco has kicked up quite a storm with his PARASCANDALO fashion line over the last few months, his logo #skandlu t-shirts in particular were a very big hit.

In general, since his return to Malta, Marco has managed to really ingrain his business here and he is definitely one to watch. We managed to find time within his busy schedule to catch up with him and speak to him about his new collection.

And for the best part - an exclusive sneak peek at the end of the article !!!

What is the inspiration behind your latest collection?
Just like my previous collection, I've mainly been inspired by my current surroundings. I also have some new slogans following the #skandlu success.

"This time round I've also added some prints with the slogan and these represent me being back in Birgu."

Describe your collection in 5 words.

Black, playful, androgynous, urban, wearable

As a designer, what is your general, daily routine ?
My daily routine consists of constantly observing my surroundings, but also researching up and coming trends and looking for  info about the things/events that inspire me. Fabric research, pattern cutting, sample making and many more related activities also take up a chunk of my day.

What fashion style do you personally enjoy wearing most ?
When it comes to dressing myself I always keep comfort and style in mind.  I think that these two belong together.

"In my opinion, it's pointless wearing something you are not comfortable in, I make sure this is translated within the pieces I design."

Describe yourself in 5 words.
Creative, energetic, business minded, friendly and down to earth

Are you excited / nervous for the upcoming show ? Any other exciting upcoming plans ?
I am very much looking forward to the 24th, I'm positive I will be very nervous on the night, but this is what i live for. That feeling you get before you start showcasing the collection is something I can't explain....the excitement and the thrill.....then the satisfaction you get when everything is finished.

Regarding up-and-coming events/plans,

" I would be interested in showcasing another collection at Malta fashion week 2015, hopefully as a solo designer where I will be launching my SS 15 collection."

MFWA : PARASCANDALO MARCO - New Designer - Mercedes Benz Malta Fashion Week 2014

On Saturday the 24th May, the New Designers Fashion Show will take place as part of Malta Fashion Week 2014. This is the show in which emerging local designers have the chance to show the country their designs and basically get noticed, it is also a form of competition as one designer will win the best new designer award at the Malta Fashion Awards one week alter. In anticipation of this event, (one of my favourite in the whole week), I will be shining the spotlight on each of these 'new designers'.

Today we shine the spotlight on PARASCANDALO MARCO - a brand creating MENSWEAR fashion for all those men who like to stand out from the crowd.

First off let’s start by saying that also his surname might not make this clear, Marco is Maltese and hails from the quaint and beautiful Birgu.  He studied in Malta, at the Malta College of Art Science and Technology (Mcast) in Art and Design and furthered his studies in Tailoring and Fashion Design. This is the first time he is exhibiting in Malta Fashion Week, from 2010 till 2104 he was actually living in London were he worked on various projects within the fashion industry.

In 2012 Marco then started up his business - selling his designed fashion pieces, he sold these pieces at new designer and vintage markets around London, such as Brick Lane and Notting Hill but they are also available for sale online on Asos Marketplace and Ebay.

Having spent the last two years in London, it should come as no surprise that his main inspiration for this collection is actually EAST LONDON, however he describes the collection as having a MALTESE twist. A ready to wear collection for all the boys who want to be noticed and different from the crowd. Marco's sneak peek is a bit different ..he's showing us his new logo (first pic) and this blurred photo below and he leaves it up to our imagination :)
